A tropical beach and a snowy Christmas market side by side, showing places to visit in December from India

December is the one month when most Indian families can get time off together, and it is also when flights, hotels and forex rates all get busier. If you are still choosing between a beach, a shopping trip and your first snow, this guide sorts the places to visit in December from India by what you actually need to know: can you get in, what does a day cost in rupees, and should you carry cash or a card.

Each destination below has been checked for the current entry rule for Indian passport holders and priced from the daily budgets in our own travel guides. The budgets are per person, per day, on the ground: food, local transport and sights, with flights and hotels left out because they vary so much by date.

The quick answer: Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Thailand are the easiest and cheapest December trips, Dubai is the shopping trip, and Japan or Europe are the snow-and-lights trips that need a visa planned now.

The Warm-Weather Trips

Dubai: the shopping trip

The 32nd Dubai Shopping Festival runs from 4 December 2026 to 17 January 2027, and December days in Dubai sit in the mid-twenties. It is the obvious choice if part of the budget is for shopping or gold.

Indian passport holders need a UAE visa, usually arranged online through an airline, hotel or agent. Some holders of valid US visas or green cards, and residence permits from certain other countries, can get a visa on arrival, but the list changed during 2026, so check the UAE's official immigration portal, ICP, before you rely on it.

Money: malls and hotels take cards everywhere; keep cash for the souks and taxis. Our Dubai Shopping Festival money guide covers the VAT refund and how much gold you can bring home, and the Dubai travel guide covers the rest.

Thailand: Bangkok, Phuket and the islands

December is Thailand's cool, dry season and its busiest month. Since 15 September 2026, Indians can stay visa-free for up to 30 days for tourism, down from 60. You also need to file the Thailand Digital Arrival Card before landing, and immigration can ask for proof of funds; Thailand's tourism authority puts that at 10,000 baht per person, while India's embassy advises carrying 20,000.

Money: Bangkok is card-friendly in malls and hotels, and street food and tuk-tuks want baht. Phuket costs noticeably more per day. Read which Thai ATMs charge foreign cards before you withdraw, and see the Bangkok and Phuket guides.

Vietnam: the cheapest long-haul feeling

Vietnam had more than 612,000 Indian visitors between January and August 2026, about six times its 2019 total, and December shows why. The north around Hanoi and Ha Long Bay is cool and dry. Central Vietnam, including Hoi An, can still be wet in December, so check the forecast before booking that leg.

Indians need an e-visa, applied for online before you fly. Money: Vietnam runs heavily on cash, and the dong's big numbers confuse first-timers; our Vietnam ATM guide explains which machines charge what, and the Hanoi guide has the day-to-day costs.

Sri Lanka: closest and cheapest

A short flight, and in December the west and south coasts, Colombo to Galle, are in their dry season, while the east coast takes the monsoon. Indians have qualified for a free 30-day ETA since 25 May 2026, but you still apply online on the official ETA site before you travel, and the scheme is time-limited, so confirm it is still free when you apply.

Money: cards work in hotels and bigger restaurants; trains, tuk-tuks and small eateries want rupees. See which Sri Lankan ATMs charge Indian cards and the Colombo guide.

Malaysia: Kuala Lumpur and Penang

Kuala Lumpur works well in December for year-end sales and a city break. Indians can enter visa-free for 30 days until 31 December 2026, with the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card filed three days before arrival; no extension beyond that date had been announced by late October, which matters if your trip runs into January. The east-coast islands are in their monsoon season and many resorts close, so stick to the west coast.

Money: KL is card-friendly; hawker stalls and taxis want ringgit. See ATMs in Malaysia and the Kuala Lumpur guide.

The Cold-Weather Trips

Japan: winter lights and snow

December in Tokyo brings clear, cold days and the winter illuminations; further north, the snow season starts. Indians need a visa, applied for through VFS, and the Japanese embassy in India says processing takes at least five working days, so apply early in a busy season.

Two money changes matter this winter. From 1 November 2026, tax-free shopping in Japan works on a refund system: you pay the 10% tax at the till and claim it back at the airport, explained in our guide to Japan's new tax-free refund system. And the departure tax rose to ¥3,000 in July. For cash, only some Japanese ATMs take Indian cards. The daily figure in the table covers food and local transport from our Japan travel guide; add sights and intercity rail on top.

Prague and Vienna: the Christmas markets

Central Europe's Christmas markets are the most-photographed December trip. Vienna's market on Rathausplatz runs from 13 November to 26 December 2026, according to published dates, and Prague's Old Town Square market usually opens in late November and runs into early January; check Prague City Tourism for this year's dates.

Both cities need a Schengen visa, and December appointments fill up, so apply as soon as your dates are fixed. Our forex guide for Schengen Europe covers euros and cards, and the Czech Republic uses its own koruna, not the euro, which catches out travellers doing both cities. See the two kinds of ATM in Prague, and the Prague and Vienna guides.

What a Week Costs: a Worked Example

Two people, seven days in Bangkok, mid-range, using the table's range of THB 2,000 to 4,500 per person per day:

Line Low High
Per person per day THB 2,000 (₹5,630) THB 4,500 (₹12,670)
Two people, seven days THB 28,000 THB 63,000
In rupees, at ₹2.815 per baht ₹78,820 ₹1,77,350

On-the-ground spending only, excluding flights and hotel, at the mid-market rate on 26 October 2026. Your actual rate will include the provider's margin.

That range is the number to plan your forex around. A sensible split for Thailand is most of it on a forex card loaded with baht, and a few days' worth in cash for street food, markets and tuk-tuks.

The Money Checklist for a December Trip

  1. Buy your forex before the rush. Rates do not jump because it is December, but appointment slots and delivery windows fill up in the last two weeks before Christmas.
  2. Load the currency you will spend. One rate, fixed once, and no cross-currency conversion at every swipe. If you are visiting Prague and Vienna together, load koruna and euros separately.
  3. Carry a small cash float, not your whole budget. RBI allows up to USD 3,000 in foreign currency notes per trip; our guide to RBI rules on carrying foreign currency has the detail.
  4. Know the TCS rule for your booking. Forex you buy for a trip you book yourself attracts TCS only above ₹10 lakh in a financial year. A package tour from an Indian operator carries a flat 2% TCS. Our guide to TCS on forex under LRS explains both.
  5. Always pay in the local currency. If a card machine abroad offers rupees, say no; that is dynamic currency conversion, and it costs several per cent extra.

Common Mistakes With December Trips

Leaving the visa too late. Japan and Schengen appointments fill up before Christmas. Apply as soon as you book flights.

Assuming Malaysia's visa-free entry continues into January. It runs until 31 December 2026 unless extended.

Choosing the wrong coast. Sri Lanka's east coast, Malaysia's east-coast islands and central Vietnam are wet in December.

Budgeting in rupees from a Google rate. The rate you get includes a margin. Plan on the range, not the midpoint.

Carrying euros to Prague. The Czech Republic uses the koruna, and paying in euros there costs more.

Forgetting the shopping tax changes. Japan now charges tax at the till and refunds it later, and Dubai's VAT refund keeps 13% plus a fee.
