Most Sri Lanka trips start and often end in Colombo, the arrival city and commercial capital. It is a mix of colonial-era buildings, Buddhist and Hindu temples and a skyline now anchored by the Lotus Tower, and most visitors give it one or two days before heading on to Kandy, Galle or the Cultural Triangle. Treating it as a bookend rather than the centrepiece is the right call.
One thing worth knowing before you book anything: India is a SAARC member, and Sri Lanka's heritage sites charge SAARC nationals a reduced rate. At Sigiriya that is roughly USD 20 against USD 30 to 35 for other foreign visitors, and at the Temple of the Tooth it is LKR 2,500 against LKR 3,000. Carry your passport and ask for the SAARC rate at the counter rather than assuming the posted foreigner price applies to you.
Bandaranaike International (CMB) sits about 30km north of the centre and the run in takes 45 to 75 minutes depending on traffic. Galle Face Green is the free one, a seafront promenade that fills up at sunset with kite-flyers and street food. Gangaramaya Temple mixes Sri Lankan, Thai, Indian and Chinese influences around an eclectic museum. The National Museum is the island's largest and closes on Mondays. Pettah Market is a dense wholesale quarter best browsed rather than shopped, and the Lotus Tower is South Asia's tallest self-supporting structure with an observation deck over the city.

Getting around
Tuk-tuks are the default for short hops, and PickMe or Uber remove the bargaining that comes with hailing one off the street. Meters are rare, so agree the fare upfront if you are not using an app. Fort, Galle Face and Pettah are close enough to walk, though the heat and humidity make early morning or evening far more comfortable.
Colombo Fort Station is where onward rail travel starts, including the scenic hill-country line toward Kandy and Ella. Reserved seats on that route sell out well ahead in season.
