The Three Rules on Rupees Going Out

CashUSD 3,000

Up to the equivalent of USD 3,000 per trip can leave India as currency notes. Anything above that goes on a forex card or as a bank transfer, which is how most travellers split a budget anyway.

LRSUSD 250,000

Every resident can send up to USD 250,000 abroad per financial year under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme, across travel, education, medical treatment, family support and investment combined.

TCSAbove ₹10 lakh

Tax collected at source applies once your foreign-exchange purchases in a financial year cross ₹10 lakh: nil when funded by an education loan, a lower rate for self-funded education and medical treatment, and 20% for everything else including travel. It is credited against your income tax when you file.

A Rupee Converter Built for Indian Money

Most currency converters start from the foreign side: how many rupees is a dollar. This one starts from the rupee, because that is where the money starts for a student paying a fee, a family sending support, or a traveller planning a trip. Type the rupees you have and the converter shows what they buy in any of 37 currencies at our live dealing rate.

Indian numbering is built in. Every reverse page carries a ladder from ₹100 to ₹10 crore with lakh and crore rows labelled both ways, so a search for "5 lakh inr to usd" or "1 crore rupees in dollars" lands on a figure, not a formula.

The rates are the ones you book at. Matrix Forex is an RBI-authorised AD Category-II dealer, quoting the live interbank rate without a margin hidden inside it; GST and any TCS appear as separate lines. Currency notes and loaded forex cards deliver same-day across 16 cities, and remittances go under LRS with the rate frozen at booking.

Rupee Converter Questions

QWhat is a rupee converter?

A calculator that starts from Indian rupees and tells you what that amount buys in another currency at today's rate. Every figure on this page is our live dealing rate, the same rate you can book, not a mid-market number with a margin added later.

QHow many currencies can I convert rupees to here?

37, from the US dollar and UAE dirham to the Maldivian rufiyaa. Each has its own page with a rupee ladder from ₹100 to ₹10 crore, lakh and crore figures, recent sessions and the rules that apply when you buy.

QWhy do lakh and crore figures matter?

Because that is how fees, remittances and property deals are quoted in India. "5 lakh inr to usd" and "1 crore rupees in dollars" are among the most-searched conversions in the country, and every reverse page here answers them in both Indian and international numbering.

QIs the rate here the rate I actually get?

Yes. It is our live bookable rate, refreshed through Indian trading hours. Banks and card issuers typically build 2 to 5 percent into the rate itself; here GST and any TCS appear as separate lines, never inside the rate.

QHow much foreign currency can I buy in a year?

Up to USD 250,000 per financial year per person under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme, across all purposes combined. Notes are capped at the equivalent of USD 3,000 per trip; the rest goes on a forex card or by transfer.

QWhen is TCS charged?

Once your foreign-exchange purchases in a financial year cross ₹10 lakh: nil where an education loan funds it, a lower rate for self-funded education and medical treatment, and 20 percent for travel and other purposes. It is credited against your income tax when you file.

QWhich is the strongest currency against the rupee?

The Kuwaiti dinar, at about ₹317, followed by the Bahraini dinar and the Omani rial. One lakh rupees buys only a few hundred of any of them, which is why their pages show four decimal places for a single rupee.
