The mid-market rate is the midpoint between the buy and sell prices on the global currency market. It is what Google shows. It is not what your bank charges.

The EUR to INR rate moves on European Central Bank policy decisions, eurozone inflation data, and political developments across the bloc. ECB rate cuts typically weaken the euro; rate holds or hikes strengthen it. The euro is also sensitive to growth differentials between Germany, France, and the rest of the eurozone.

The rate you see on Google is a reference number. The rate you transact at depends on who you buy from.

Here is where most travellers lose money before they leave India. A bank or airport counter quoting EUR at the mid-market rate plus a markup will not show that markup as a separate line item. It is built into the exchange rate.

For a Schengen trip covering France, Italy, and Spain, a family typically buys several thousand euros. Even a small per-euro markup compounds into a meaningful rupee figure across the full trip budget. The gap is largest at airport counters and smallest with online forex providers.

There are typically three cost layers on a EUR conversion: the exchange rate markup built into the quoted rate, a transaction or service fee that some providers waive above a threshold, and GST charged on the service component.

Matrix Forex sells euros at the live interbank rate without a markup. The rate quoted is the rate you transact at.

Ways to convert

Ways to convert INR to EUR

A bank wire transfer suits larger amounts, particularly for property purchases or business payments in the eurozone. Processing takes one to three working days with the bank's exchange rate plus SWIFT charges.

Online forex providers let you book a rate online, then choose branch pickup or door delivery. The booking locks the rate before payment.

A forex card is a prepaid card loaded with euros before travel. It works at point-of-sale and ATMs across the entire Schengen area on a single load. The Matrix Forex Card supports EUR alongside 27 other currencies.

For smaller amounts, branch cash exchange remains the fastest option.

Under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme, an Indian resident individual can remit up to USD 250,000 (or its EUR equivalent) per financial year for permitted purposes — travel, education, medical, family support, gifts, and investments.

TCS applies above ₹10 lakh per person per financial year. Education funded through a loan from a Section 80E recognised institution is at 0% TCS regardless of amount. Self-funded education and medical are at 5% above ₹10 lakh. Other LRS purposes including travel, gifts, and investments are at 20% above ₹10 lakh.

TCS is not a final tax. It is adjusted against your annual income tax liability when you file your return.
