The flights are filling up for December, and someone in the family has already said the words "DSF sale". Before you book, three money questions are worth settling: how many dirhams to take, how much of the 5% VAT you will actually get back, and what India lets you bring home without paying duty.

The Dubai Shopping Festival 2026 runs from 4 December 2026 to 17 January 2027. It is the 32nd edition, 45 days long, and organised by Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment, part of Dubai's Department of Economy and Tourism, according to the organiser's press release.

The short version: put most of your shopping budget on a dirham forex card, keep a modest cash float for souks and taxis, claim the VAT on your bigger receipts, and know that gold jewellery is not a free pass at Indian customs on a short trip. The rest of this guide shows each step in rupees.

The release does not promise specific discount levels, so treat any "up to 90% off" headline as a shop's claim, not the festival's. Last season, shoppers won more than AED 11 million in raffles and prizes, according to the same release.

Two dates matter more than the rest. The festival overlaps Christmas and New Year, when Dubai hotel rates are at their peak, and it ends in mid-January, after Indian school holidays. If you can travel in the second week of January, you get the same festival with cheaper rooms. Still choosing between Dubai and somewhere else? Our guide to places to visit in December from India compares eight trips with daily budgets in rupees.

How Much Dirham to Take

Most Dubai spending happens in malls, hotels and restaurants that take cards without fuss. Cash matters for the Gold and Spice Souks, abra rides, small eateries and tips. Our guide to forex for travelling to the UAE covers the full card and cash split.

For a festival trip, a simple plan works:

  1. Decide the shopping budget separately from the trip budget. Festival shopping is the line that runs over.
  2. Load the shopping money on a dirham forex card. You fix the rate once, before you fly, and every mall swipe comes out of dirhams you already hold.
  3. Carry a cash float of a few hundred dirhams a day for souks, taxis and tips.
  4. Keep the limits in mind. RBI lets you buy up to USD 3,000 in foreign currency notes per trip, roughly AED 11,000, with the rest on a card; our guide to RBI rules on carrying foreign currency has the detail. On arrival, the UAE requires you to declare cash and valuables above AED 60,000, according to the UAE government portal.

If you plan to withdraw cash in Dubai instead, read what a Dubai ATM really charges an Indian debit card first. On a small withdrawal, the fees can stack up to several per cent.

What Your Festival Shopping Costs in Rupees

Take AED 3,000 of shopping in two purchases, say a phone accessory haul and a jacket. With 5% VAT, the shops charge AED 3,150. Here is what that costs on the day, three ways.

How you pay Rate used Charged
Forex card loaded with dirhams ₹25.86 per AED ₹81,459
Dirham cash bought in India ₹26.65 per AED ₹83,948
Indian credit card, paying in dirhams ₹25.74 per AED, plus 3.5% markup and 18% GST on the markup ₹84,430 (₹81,081 + ₹2,838 + ₹511)

Rates: AED mid-market ₹25.74, and the Matrix Forex AED card rate (₹25.86) and cash rate (₹26.65), from the live rate feed at 10:55 AM IST on 21 October 2026. The credit card line assumes the card network's rate equals the mid-market rate, which is close but not exact, and a 3.5% markup typical of regular Indian cards. Rates move through the day.

AED 3,150 of Dubai Shopping Festival shopping costs about ₹81,459 on a dirham forex card, ₹83,948 in dirham cash and ₹84,430 on an Indian credit card

The gap is almost ₹3,000 on a modest shopping day, and it grows with the bill. Physical notes cost more to source and ship than a card load, which is why cash is the dearest option here and the float should stay small.

One more line to watch: the card machine in a Dubai mall may offer to charge you in rupees. Say no. That is dynamic currency conversion, and it adds a markup before your bank adds its own.

Getting the 5% VAT Back

The UAE charges 5% VAT, and tourists can claim it back on goods they take out of the country. The scheme is run by the Federal Tax Authority with Planet as the operator. These are the rules as the Federal Tax Authority states them.

Rule What it says
Who can claim Tourists aged 18 or over who entered the UAE on a tourist visa and are not UAE residents
Minimum purchase AED 250 per tax-free transaction, excluding VAT
Deadline Validate the purchases within 90 days of the tax invoice date
Operator's deduction 13% of the VAT claimed, plus AED 3.60 per tax-free transaction
How it is paid Cash, card, or the WeChat and Alipay wallets
Cash limit Up to AED 35,000 in cash; no limit on refunds to a card
Late claims You can request the refund up to one year after validating at export

Source: UAE Federal Tax Authority, VAT Refund for Tourists, page last updated 25 August 2026.

What that means for the AED 3,000 example. The VAT on two purchases of AED 1,500 is AED 150. Take off 13% and AED 3.60 per purchase, and you get AED 123.30 back, about ₹3,170 at today's mid-market rate. Ask each shop for the tax-free tag at the till, then validate the purchases at a Planet point at the airport with your passport, the receipts and the goods. If the goods are going in your checked bag, validate before you check in.

Two things follow. Small receipts are barely worth it: on an AED 250 purchase, the VAT is AED 12.50, and you get about AED 7.28 back. And a refund to your card comes back in dirhams, which on a forex card stays in your dirham wallet for the next trip, or can be sold back when you are home.

Buying Gold During the Festival: What India Lets You Bring Back

Gold is the purchase most Indian families plan around, and it is where the rules catch people out. India's Baggage Rules, 2026 took effect on 2 February 2026, and Gulf News reported the main changes.

Allowance for an Indian resident flying in Under the 2026 rules
General duty-free allowance ₹75,000, up from ₹50,000
Duty-free gold jewellery 40 grams for women, 20 grams for men, only if you have lived abroad for more than a year; the old rupee caps on these weights were removed
Gold bars, coins and biscuits Not covered by the jewellery allowance
Arriving by land No general allowance

Source: Gulf News, 3 February 2026, reporting the Baggage Rules, 2026.

The line that matters for a festival trip is the second one. The 20 and 40 gram jewellery allowances are for people who have lived abroad for over a year. On a one-week shopping trip, you do not qualify. Anything you buy, jewellery included, then has to fit inside the ₹75,000 general allowance, about AED 2,900 at today's rate, or be declared at the red channel and taxed on the value above the limit. Gold bars and coins sit outside the jewellery concession altogether.

So before you buy, add up everything you will carry home: the gold, the phone, the perfumes and the gifts. If the total is over ₹75,000, declare it and keep the bills. Customs rates and procedures change, so check the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs before you fly back.

Common Mistakes

Shopping the festival on a credit card by default. On AED 3,150, that costs about ₹3,000 more than a dirham forex card.

Pressing "INR" on the card machine. It is never cheaper than paying in dirhams.

Skipping the tax-free tag. You cannot claim VAT later without it, so ask at the till.

Checking in the shopping before validating it. The goods may be inspected, so if they are going in the hold, validate first and check in second.

Assuming gold jewellery is duty-free. On a short trip it counts against the ₹75,000 allowance.

Booking the most expensive week. Christmas and New Year carry peak hotel rates; the festival runs until 17 January.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the Dubai Shopping Festival 2026?

The 32nd Dubai Shopping Festival runs from 4 December 2026 to 17 January 2027, a 45-day season organised by Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment, part of Dubai's Department of Economy and Tourism.

How much cash should I carry for the Dubai Shopping Festival?

Keep cash for souks, taxis, small eateries and tips, a few hundred dirhams a day for most travellers, and put the main shopping budget on a dirham forex card. RBI allows up to USD 3,000 in foreign currency notes per trip, roughly AED 11,000, and the UAE requires you to declare cash and valuables above AED 60,000.

How much VAT do tourists get back in Dubai?

Tourists can claim back the 5% VAT on goods taken out of the UAE, on purchases of at least AED 250 excluding VAT. Planet, the operator, deducts 13% of the VAT claimed plus AED 3.60 per tax-free transaction, so on AED 1,500 of shopping you receive about AED 61.65 of the AED 75 VAT.

How much gold can I bring from Dubai to India duty-free?

Under India's Baggage Rules, 2026, the duty-free jewellery allowance is 40 grams for women and 20 grams for men, but only for people who have lived abroad for more than a year. On a short trip, jewellery counts within the general duty-free allowance of ₹75,000, and anything above it must be declared.

Is it cheaper to pay in rupees or dirhams in Dubai?

Pay in dirhams. Choosing rupees on the card machine triggers dynamic currency conversion, which adds the merchant's markup and, on many Indian cards, a separate bank fee on top.

Can I get the VAT refund on my forex card?

The UAE refunds VAT in cash, to a card, or to the WeChat and Alipay wallets. A refund to a dirham forex card normally comes back in dirhams, so it stays in your wallet for the next trip, but check with your card provider.
