In One Paragraph

Student remittance is the outward transfer of money from India to pay for education abroad: university tuition and instalments, admission and accommodation deposits, the visa-linked payments that come before them such as a GIC for Canada or a blocked account for Germany, and a student's monthly living expenses. Every one of them is an education remittance under the RBI Liberalised Remittance Scheme, carries a purpose code (usually S1107 for fees), needs Form A2, and counts toward the USD 2,50,000 a year the remitter is allowed. Above ₹10 lakh in a financial year, TCS on education remittance is 2% on the excess when it is self-funded and nil when it comes from a Section 80E education loan.

01 The Fee Ledger

What Reaches The University, Line By Line.

An indicative picture: the rate, the currency amount, TCS by the rules that apply to education, and where bank charges can appear. The desk prepares the exact quote once it has your instruction.

This is a rough guide to help you plan, not a quote. Rates move through the day, TCS depends on your funding and what you have already remitted this year, and bank charges vary by route.

The First ₹10 Lakh Is TCS-Free

TCS on education remittance starts only above ₹10 lakh of LRS remittances in a financial year, counted across every purpose. Below that, nothing is collected.

Self-Funded Above ₹10 Lakh: 2%

From 1 April 2026 the rate on the amount above the threshold is 2% for education paid from your own funds, down from 5%. On ₹14 lakh that is ₹8,000, not ₹25,000.

Education Loan: Nil

Fees remitted out of an education loan from a bank or financial institution qualifying under Section 80E carry no TCS at any amount. Bring the sanction letter.

Talk It Through

Fifteen Minutes, Every Question Answered.

A free call with a remittance officer, no obligation and nothing to send us first. Ask anything about paying a university abroad from India: what it really costs, which documents apply to you, how long it takes, and what the rules mean in your situation.

  1. What it will actually cost. The live rate, the service fee, GST, and TCS worked out for your funding. Also the part nobody explains: what correspondent banks can deduct on the way, and how OUR charges stop it.
  2. Which documents apply to you. The list changes with the payment. Tuition is not the same as a GIC, a blocked account or monthly living expenses, and the destination changes it again.
  3. How the timing works. How long a transfer takes, what a banking day means for your deadline, and how late you can leave it before a fee due date is at risk.
  4. What your university is asking for. How to read a SWIFT or BIC, an IBAN, and the payment reference the fee office wants quoted. This is where most transfers go wrong.
  5. Nothing to commit to. No card, no obligation, and no follow-up unless you ask for one. Plenty of people call, understand it, and go away to think.

This is a conversation about the money, not about admissions. We do not advise on universities, courses, SOPs or visa interviews, and we will say so if you ask. What we know is the payment: LRS, TCS, purpose codes, Form A2, and the route your money takes.

Where We Are

Students We Send For, City By City.

The transfer is done remotely start to finish, so where you live changes nothing about the rate or how fast the university is credited. Send the instruction on WhatsApp from anywhere in India. These are the cities most of our students remit from.

The remittance never needs a visit. Walk-in and doorstep delivery matter only for the cash and forex card you carry, and those run in all sixteen.

03 What You Can Pay

Every Education Payment, One Desk.

Tuition fees, a German blocked account, a Canadian GIC, admission and accommodation deposits, and monthly living expenses. Choose the payment on your instruction and Matrix confirms the purpose code and the beneficiary route before funds are arranged.

Tuition Fees

Most Common

Pay the university invoice or fee instruction in full or by instalment, with the student ID as the payment reference. The commonest education remittance we handle.

05 Documents

Documents Required For Student Remittance.

The same core file covers every education transfer. A few cases add one document: an I-20 for the United States, the sanction letter and loan account statement when fees come from an education loan, the GIC letter for Canada, the blocked-account confirmation for Germany. Everything is checked once, and later transfers for the same student reuse it.

06 TCS, LRS And Form A2

The Rules, Without The Jargon.

The LRS limit for education, TCS on education remittance, and the Form A2 purpose code. Three things every education remittance runs on, with the figures as they apply from 1 April 2026.

The LRS Limit For Education

A resident individual may remit up to USD 2,50,000 a year across all permitted purposes, education included. Prior forex use in the year counts toward it. The limit belongs to the remitter, so a parent's limit is separate from the student's.

Form A2 And The Purpose Code

Form A2 is the declaration behind every outward remittance: remitter, beneficiary, amount and purpose. Fees usually carry S1107; living expenses and deposits can differ. Matrix fills the form with you and confirms the code that fits your instruction.

07 The SWIFT Route

Why A University Sometimes Receives A Little Less.

A transfer passes through more than one bank, and some of them can deduct a charge on the way. Here is where that happens, and how to stop it.

SHA

Shared charges. You pay Matrix's side, the receiving banks take theirs from the amount. The common default, and the reason a few dollars go missing.

OUR

You bear every charge upfront and the university receives the exact invoice amount. Ask for it when a fee office insists on the full figure; Matrix prices the route wherever it allows it.

MT103

The SWIFT confirmation with the reference the university's finance office can trace. Matrix sends it to you the day the transfer goes out.

08 Parents And Students

Two People, One Transfer.

A parent can send money to a child studying abroad under their own LRS limit. The parent is usually the remitter, the university or the student is the beneficiary, and the limit belongs to whoever sends. Each side has its own worries. Both get a human.

For Parents

Send Money To A Child Studying Abroad

The hardest part is rarely the money. It is reading the university's instruction, knowing which documents prove the purpose, and being sure of what actually lands. A Matrix specialist walks the instruction with you, fills Form A2 and quotes the landed amount before you pay.

  • Tuition, deposits and monthly living expenses, all under your LRS
  • TCS worked out before you pay, refundable in your ITR
  • MT103 confirmation to forward to the university
For Students

Fees Today, Arrival Money Tomorrow

One desk handles the tuition transfer, the living-expense top-ups through the year, and the money you land with: a multi-currency forex card and a little cash for the first week. Documents are checked once and reused for every transfer after.

  • Blocked account and GIC funding for Germany and Canada
  • Forex card in 28 currencies for the semester, delivered home
  • WhatsApp support in your time zone once you are there
RemitterThe person sending the money. Their PAN, their LRS limit, their Form A2. Usually the parent.
BeneficiaryWho receives it: the university, the accommodation provider, the GIC bank, or the student.
LRSThe Liberalised Remittance Scheme: USD 2,50,000 per resident per financial year across all purposes.
TCSTax Collected at Source on remittances above ₹10 lakh a year. Refundable in your ITR.
Form A2The declaration for every outward remittance: remitter, beneficiary, amount, purpose.
Purpose CodeThe RBI classification of the payment. Education fees are usually S1107.
SWIFT / BICThe code that identifies the receiving bank. It is on the university's instruction.
IBANThe account number format used in the UK, Europe and elsewhere. Check it character by character.
MT103The SWIFT confirmation with the reference a finance office can trace.
CorrespondentAn intermediary bank between Matrix and the university's bank. It can deduct a charge.
OUR / SHAWho pays the bank charges: all on you (OUR) or shared (SHA). OUR lands the full amount.
Section 80EThe income-tax section for education loans. Fees paid from such a loan carry no TCS.
I-20The US form a university issues once you are admitted. It carries the programme and the funding shown, and it belongs in the remittance file for a USA transfer.
GICGuaranteed Investment Certificate. The Canadian deposit many study permits require as proof of living costs for the first year.
SperrkontoThe German blocked account. The visa requires a year of living costs deposited before it is granted.
OSHCOverseas Student Health Cover, the health insurance an Australian student visa requires for the length of the course.
CASConfirmation of Acceptance for Studies, the UK reference number a university issues once the tuition deposit is paid.
How It Works

Pay University Fees Abroad In Five Steps.

01

Share The Instruction

Send the university invoice, fee page or provider instruction on WhatsApp or the form above. That is enough to start.

02

Get The Fee Ledger

The rate, the currency amount, TCS by your funding and every charge, on one quote. Nothing is hidden inside the rate.

03

Beneficiary Details Checked

SWIFT or BIC, IBAN or account number, and the payment reference are verified against the instruction before anything moves.

04

Families ask the same things first. The answers are below, and the fifteen minute call covers anything they do not.

10 Questions Families Ask First

TCS, LRS, Deadlines And What The University Actually Receives.

Answered the way the desk answers them. Anything else, .

What is student remittance?+
An outward transfer from India for overseas education expenses: tuition fees, admission and accommodation deposits, living expenses, GIC funding for Canada and blocked-account funding for Germany. Every transfer goes under the RBI Liberalised Remittance Scheme with KYC, purpose documents and Form A2.
How do I pay university fees abroad from India?+
Share the university's payment instruction, get the fee ledger with the rate and every charge, complete KYC and Form A2 digitally, and fund the transfer by bank transfer. Matrix sends the SWIFT the same banking day and gives you the MT103 reference to forward to the fee office.
Can a parent pay a child's university fees abroad?+
Yes. A resident Indian parent can remit tuition, deposits and living expenses under their own LRS limit for a child studying abroad. The parent is the remitter on Form A2; the university or the student is the beneficiary, and proof of relationship is kept on file once.
What is the TCS on education remittance in 2026?+
From 1 April 2026: nothing up to ₹10 lakh of LRS remittances in a financial year; above that, 2% on the excess for self-funded education and nil when the fees come from a Section 80E education loan. TCS is a government tax, not a Matrix charge, and comes back as credit or refund in your ITR.
How do I claim the TCS back?+
It appears in your Form 26AS against your PAN. When you file your income-tax return it is set off against tax due, and any excess is refunded. Keep the TCS certificate Matrix issues with the transfer.
What is the LRS limit for education?+
USD 2,50,000 per resident individual per financial year, across all permitted purposes including education. Prior remittances and forex purchases in the year count toward it. A parent and a student each have their own limit.
Which purpose code applies to education payments?+
Tuition and university fees usually go under S1107. Living expenses and some deposits can carry a different code. Matrix confirms the code against your instruction and fills the Form A2 with you.
What documents are required for student remittance?+
PAN and passport of the remitter; the admission or offer letter and the tuition invoice or instruction; the beneficiary bank details from that instruction; Form A2; and the 80E sanction letter if the fees come from an education loan. The checklist above adapts to the payment type, and compliance may ask for one more document after review.
How long does a university fee transfer take?+
Typically 24 to 48 hours from funds and documents being in, on banking days, subject to verification and the correspondent route. Same-day SWIFT is possible when everything is in by early afternoon.
Will the university receive the exact invoice amount?+
With shared charges (SHA), intermediary and receiving banks can deduct a small fee on the way. If the fee office insists on the full figure, ask for an OUR-charges quote and Matrix prices the route so the full amount is credited, wherever the route allows it.
Can I send living expenses to a student every month?+
Yes. Maintenance to the student's own account abroad is a permitted purpose under the parent's LRS. The relationship and enrolment documents are checked once and reused for every monthly transfer.
Can Matrix pay a GIC in Canada or a blocked account in Germany?+
Yes. Both go by SWIFT to the provider's instruction, before the visa appointment. Bring the GIC application or the blocked-account opening confirmation and the student's passport and offer letter.
My university uses Flywire or a payment portal. Can I still use Matrix?+
Usually yes. Most portals issue bank-transfer instructions with an account and a reference; Matrix remits by SWIFT to those details with the reference attached. Send us the portal's instruction page and the desk confirms the route before you pay.
Can I pay university fees with a credit card from India?+
Some fee offices accept cards, but the card issuer applies its own conversion markup and a foreign-transaction fee, and the payment still counts under LRS with TCS. A SWIFT transfer at the live rate is usually the cheaper route for a full tuition instalment.
Which forex card is best for students going abroad?+
A multi-currency card loaded at the live rate in the currency of the country, with no cross-currency charge on the currencies loaded, and reloadable from India by the family. The Matrix student forex card holds 28 currencies and is delivered home before the flight.
Is Matrix Forex RBI-authorised?+
Yes. Matrix Forex Services Pvt Ltd is an RBI Authorised Dealer Category-II, licence NDL-ADII-0023-2023, in foreign exchange since 2011 with eight branches and doorstep service in sixteen cities.
What is education remittance?+
Education remittance is the outward transfer of money from India to pay for studying abroad: university tuition, admission and accommodation deposits, visa-linked payments such as a Canadian GIC or a German blocked account, and a student's monthly living expenses. It runs under the RBI Liberalised Remittance Scheme and carries a purpose code, usually S1107 for fees.
How much money can parents send abroad for education?+
Up to USD 2,50,000 per parent per financial year under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme, across all purposes combined. The limit belongs to whoever remits, so both parents have their own, and the student has a separate limit again. Anything above the ₹10 lakh TCS threshold in a year attracts 2% TCS on the excess when the money is self-funded, and nil when it comes from a Section 80E education loan.
How do I fund a GIC for Canada from India?+
Open the Guaranteed Investment Certificate with a participating Canadian bank or provider, which issues an instruction with its account details and your reference. Matrix remits the amount by SWIFT to that instruction before your study permit appointment, and sends you the confirmation the provider needs to release your GIC certificate.
How do I open and fund a blocked account for Germany?+
Open the Sperrkonto with a provider such as the ones German missions accept, and they issue an opening confirmation with an IBAN and BIC. Matrix remits the required amount in euros to that account under LRS, and the provider then issues the blocking confirmation your visa application needs. The semester contribution to the university is a separate transfer afterwards.
What is the best way to send money to a student abroad?+
For a full tuition instalment, a SWIFT bank transfer at the live rate is usually cheapest, because card payments add the issuer's conversion markup and a foreign-transaction fee on top of LRS and TCS. For monthly living expenses, a transfer to the student's own account abroad works, and for day-to-day spending a multi-currency forex card avoids cross-currency charges on the currencies loaded.
