Currency Names of All Countries: The Complete List, With Every Currency in Rupees
You are filling in a visa form and it asks for the currency of the country you are visiting. Or your cousin in Nairobi says a gift cost 5,000 shillings and you want to know if that is a lot. Or your child's geography homework wants the currency names of all countries by Friday. Every one of those starts with the same question: what does that country use for money, and what is it worth in rupees?
This page answers both. Below are the currency names of all 197 countries, grouped by region, each with its official code, its symbol, what one unit is worth in Indian rupees, and what ₹100 gets you in that currency.
Every rupee figure on this page is a rate at the time of writing. Reference values are mid-market rates on 25 September 2026, and Matrix Forex's own selling rates are from 25 September 2026, 9:30 AM IST. Exchange rates move every trading day, so treat these as a snapshot, not a quote.

How to Read This World Currency List
Each table has the same seven columns.
- Country is the sovereign state, with its common English name. We have covered the 193 United Nations members plus Vatican City, Palestine, Taiwan and Kosovo, which gives 197.
- Currency name is what the money is called in English. Where a second currency is officially used alongside it, that one is noted in brackets.
- Code is the three-letter ISO 4217 code that banks, airlines and exchange counters use. INR, USD, AED.
- Symbol is what you see on price tags. Many countries share a symbol, which is exactly why codes exist.
- 1 unit in ₹ is what one unit of that currency is worth in Indian rupees at the reference rate on 25 September 2026.
- ₹100 gets you flips it around: the amount of that currency ₹100 is worth. This is the column most people actually want when they ask about the value of Indian currency in other countries.
- We exchange it marks the currencies Matrix Forex buys and sells in India. We deal in 37; the Hong Kong dollar is the one without a row here, because Hong Kong is a territory rather than a country.
A reference rate is the midpoint between what banks pay and what they charge each other. Nobody sells currency to a traveller at that rate. It is the fairest single number for comparing currencies, and that is all these tables try to do.

Indian Subcontinent
India's neighbours are where rupee values surprise people most. The Nepalese rupee is pegged at 1.60 to one Indian rupee, so ₹100 always gets you 160 Nepalese rupees, and Bhutan's ngultrum trades 1:1 with the rupee. The Pakistani and Sri Lankan rupees, by contrast, float freely and are worth far less.

Most of Europe now shares one currency. Bulgaria became the 21st euro area member on 1 January 2026, and six more countries use the euro without being in the EU's euro area, which is why it appears 27 times below. Switzerland and Liechtenstein share the Swiss franc, and the UK keeps the pound.

Africa
Africa has more countries than any other region and two of the world's largest currency unions. Eight West African states share the West African CFA franc (XOF), and six Central African states share the Central African CFA franc (XAF). Both are fixed to the euro at 655.957 francs, which is why they show the same rupee value. Lesotho, Namibia and Eswatini peg their currencies 1:1 to the South African rand. The rand is legal tender in Lesotho and Namibia and widely accepted in Eswatini.

Six island nations in the eastern Caribbean share the East Caribbean dollar, fixed at 2.70 to the US dollar. Panama's balboa is pegged 1:1 to the US dollar and circulates only as coins, so in practice Panama runs on dollar notes. El Salvador uses the US dollar outright.

Why 197 Countries Need Only 143 Currencies
The count of currencies is smaller than the count of countries because many countries have chosen not to run a currency of their own. There are three ways this happens.
A currency union. Several countries agree to share one currency and one central bank. The euro is the biggest example, followed by the two CFA francs in Africa and the East Caribbean dollar.
Adopting someone else's currency. A country simply uses another country's money. Ecuador, El Salvador, Timor-Leste, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia and Palau use the US dollar. Montenegro and Kosovo use the euro. Economists call it dollarisation, and it usually follows a period of very high inflation.
A currency board or peg. The country keeps its own notes but fixes their value to a larger currency. The Nepalese rupee to the Indian rupee, the Brunei dollar to the Singapore dollar, and the Gulf currencies to the US dollar all work this way. The UAE dirham, for example, has been held at 3.6725 to the dollar since 1997.
Pegs matter to anyone converting rupees. A pegged currency moves against the rupee exactly as the currency it is pegged to does. When the rupee weakens against the dollar, the dirham, riyal and Omani rial all get more expensive in rupees by the same amount on the same day. Our explainer on why the exchange rate changes every day covers what moves the rupee itself.
Currency Names That Repeat Around the World
A name alone rarely tells you which currency someone means. These names are shared by several unrelated currencies, each with its own value.
| Name | How many currencies carry it | Examples, with 1 unit in ₹ on 25 September 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Dollar | 19 | US dollar ₹96.02 Singapore dollar ₹75.03 Jamaican dollar ₹0.6076 |
| Franc | 9 | Swiss franc ₹116.01 West African CFA franc ₹0.1666 Guinean franc ₹0.0109 |

Most of these names are old. Dollar comes from the thaler, a silver coin minted in Bohemia in the 1500s. Dinar and dinero trace back to the Roman denarius. Rupee comes from the Sanskrit rupya, wrought silver, and gave its name to money from Mauritius to Indonesia. If you are curious how the Indian and Pakistani rupees split apart after 1947, we wrote a separate piece on the Indian rupee versus the Pakistani rupee.
What the Three Letters in a Currency Code Mean
Every currency has a three-letter code set by the ISO 4217 standard, which the International Organization for Standardization maintains through SIX Group in Switzerland. The pattern is simple once you see it.
- The first two letters are the country's own ISO code: IN for India, US for the United States, AE for the UAE.
- The third letter is usually the first letter of the currency's name: R for rupee, D for dollar or dinar.
- So INR is India's rupee, USD is the United States' dollar, and KWD is Kuwait's dinar.
- Codes beginning with X belong to no single country. XOF and XAF are the two CFA francs, XCD is the East Caribbean dollar, and XAU is an ounce of gold.
Codes solve the problem the name table above creates. "Dollar" could mean 19 different currencies, but CAD can only mean the Canadian one. That is why your forex invoice, your bank's SWIFT message and the board at the airport all use codes. You can check any code against the official list on the ISO 4217 page or download the current file from SIX Group.

Mistakes People Make With World Currency Lists
Treating the list rate as the rate you will pay. A reference rate is a midpoint. Any exchange, bank or card adds a margin on top, and the gap is wider for less traded currencies. Always compare a bookable rate, one you can actually transact at, and ask what is included.
Assuming a shared name means a shared value. A dinar in Kuwait is worth over three hundred rupees. A dinar in Iraq is worth a few paise. Check the code, not the name.
Carrying US dollars everywhere. Dollars are welcome in some countries on this list and useless in others. Our country-by-country guide to using US dollars abroad covers where they work.
Forgetting the rules on the Indian side. For most destinations, up to the equivalent of USD 3,000 per trip can be carried out of India as foreign currency notes, and the rest goes on a forex card or as a transfer. Every resident can send up to USD 250,000 abroad per financial year under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme. For most purposes, tax collected at source applies once your remittances under the scheme cross ₹10 lakh in a financial year (overseas tour packages follow a different rule), and it is credited back against your income tax. Our guides on RBI rules for carrying currency abroad and TCS on forex have the detail, and the Reserve Bank of India publishes the master directions.
Using an old list. Currencies change more often than people expect. Croatia moved to the euro in 2023, Bulgaria in 2026, Sierra Leone knocked three zeros off the leone in 2022, Zimbabwe launched the Zimbabwe gold (ZiG) in 2024, and Syria knocked two zeros off its pound on 1 January 2026, which is why some converters still show a Syrian pound worth a hundredth of the one above. A list older than a year or two will have mistakes in it. This one was checked against the ISO file published on 17 September 2026.
How the Rupee Compares With Other Countries' Currencies
One rupee buys less than one unit of most major currencies, because the rupee is a small unit, not because it is weak in a wider sense. Unit value mostly reflects history: where a currency started, and whether it was ever redenominated. On 25 September 2026, ₹100 was worth 1.04 US dollars and 0.915 euros, but also 160 Nepalese rupees, 289 Pakistani rupees and 344 Sri Lankan rupees.
So the rupee buys more than one unit in many of the countries Indians travel to most, including Vietnam, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Japan, South Korea and much of Africa and South America. If you want the full picture of where the rupee stands and how it has moved in 2026, our piece on the ranking of Indian currency in the world covers it, and the list of the lowest currency in the world shows where a rupee goes furthest.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the currency names of all countries?
The 197 countries in our list use 143 national currencies. The most common names are the dollar (19 currencies), the franc (9), the dinar (8), the peso (8), the rupee (6) and the pound (6). The euro is the most widely shared single currency, used in 27 countries. The full country-by-country list, with codes, symbols and the value of each currency in Indian rupees as of 25 September 2026, is in the tables on this page.
How many currencies are there in the world?
The 197 sovereign countries covered here use 143 different national currencies, because several groups of countries share one: 27 use the euro, 14 use one of the two CFA francs, 6 use the East Caribbean dollar and 7 use the US dollar as their only currency. The official ISO 4217 list, published 17 September 2026, carries 178 active codes, since it also includes currencies of dependent territories, precious metals such as gold (XAU) and special fund codes.
Which countries use the rupee as their currency?
Six countries have a currency called the rupee: India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Mauritius and Seychelles. Each is a separate currency with its own value. Bhutan's ngultrum is pegged 1:1 to the Indian rupee and the Indian rupee circulates there alongside it, while the Nepalese rupee is pegged at 1.60 to one Indian rupee. The Indonesian rupiah and the Maldivian rufiyaa share the same Sanskrit root, rupya, meaning wrought silver.
What is the value of Indian currency in other countries?
At reference rates on 25 September 2026, ₹100 is worth about 1.04 US dollars, 0.92 euros, 0.79 British pounds, 3.82 UAE dirhams, 34.8 Thai baht, 160 Nepalese rupees and 27,028 Vietnamese dong. The value changes every trading day, and the rate you actually pay when buying currency includes the dealer's margin, so check a live bookable rate before you exchange.
Which countries use the euro?
27 countries use the euro. 21 are European Union members in the euro area: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia and Spain. Bulgaria is the newest, from 1 January 2026. Andorra, Monaco, San Marino and Vatican City use it by agreement with the EU, and Montenegro and Kosovo use it without a formal agreement.
Where can I find all country currency rates in Indian rupees?
The tables on this page list the value of every country's currency in Indian rupees as reference rates on 25 September 2026. For the 37 currencies Matrix Forex exchanges, each has a live converter page in both directions that shows the rate you can book today, and the Indian Rupee Converter shows what a sum in rupees buys in all 37 at once.
What does a currency code like USD or INR mean?
Currency codes come from the ISO 4217 standard. The first two letters are usually the country's ISO code and the third is usually the first letter of the currency's name, so INR is India plus rupee and USD is United States plus dollar. Codes that start with X belong to no single country, such as XOF for the West African CFA franc, XCD for the East Caribbean dollar and XAU for gold.
