1 MUR to INR today
The mid-market rate is the midpoint between the buy and sell prices on the global currency market. It is what Google shows. It is not what your bank charges.
The MUR to INR rate moves on Bank of Mauritius policy decisions, tourism receipts, and global financial services flows. Mauritius's economy depends heavily on tourism, sugar exports, and offshore financial services — so seasonal tourism patterns and global services flows shape the currency. The Indian rupee's own movement against the dollar shapes the cross-rate. Mauritius and India share strong historical and economic ties, with the rupee carrying the same name in both countries.
The rate you see on Google is a reference number. The rate you transact at depends on who you buy from.
GST on the service component (tiered) + TCS above ₹10 lakh per FY apply per LRS rules. Disclosed upfront.
What 1 MUR to INR actually costs you
Here is where most honeymoon couples and beach travellers lose money without realising it. A bank or counter quoting MUR at the mid-market rate plus a markup will not show that markup as a separate line item. It is built into the exchange rate.
On a typical Mauritius honeymoon or family beach trip, a couple or family buys tens of thousands of Mauritian rupees for resort extras, dining, water sports, and shopping. Mauritius is a premium destination, so even a small per-MUR markup compounds into a meaningful rupee figure across an extended stay. Airport counters at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International typically carry larger markups than in-city banks at Port Louis or Grand Baie.
There are typically three cost layers on an MUR conversion: the exchange rate markup built into the quoted rate, a transaction or service fee, and GST charged on the service component.
Matrix Forex sells Mauritian rupees at the live interbank rate without a markup.
Ways to convert MUR to INR
A bank wire transfer suits larger amounts, particularly for destination wedding payments to Mauritius resorts or for property transactions. Processing takes one to three working days with the bank's exchange rate plus SWIFT charges.
Online forex providers let you book a rate online, then choose branch pickup or door delivery before departure. The booking locks the rate before payment.
Mauritian rupee is not loadable on a forex card — MUR is not among the supported card currencies. Travellers typically carry MUR cash purchased in India before departure, plus a USD reserve since US dollars are widely accepted across resorts and tourist-facing businesses in Mauritius.
Branch cash exchange remains the standard pre-departure option for Mauritius trips.
Tax and limits on MUR to INR
Under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme, an Indian resident individual can remit up to USD 250,000 (or its MUR equivalent) per financial year for permitted purposes — travel, education, medical, family support, gifts, and investments.
TCS applies above ₹10 lakh per person per financial year. Self-funded education and medical are at 5% above ₹10 lakh. Other LRS purposes including travel, gifts, and investments are at 20% above ₹10 lakh — relevant for honeymoon and destination wedding budgets that often cross the ₹10 lakh threshold. Education funded through a Section 80E loan is at 0% TCS regardless of amount. Overseas tour packages have their own TCS structure.
TCS is not a final tax. It is adjusted against your annual income tax liability.
