Le Morne and Black River make up the quiet south-west corner of Mauritius: luxury resorts, lagoons and hiking trails beneath Le Morne Brabant. It is an hour or more from the airport, and a car or pre-booked transfer is the practical way in.
Le Morne Brabant is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 2008. Through the 18th and early 19th centuries it sheltered maroons, enslaved people who escaped and hid in its caves and on its summit, and UNESCO notes that its meaning reaches the lands they came from, including India. You can hike to the viewpoint at about 470 metres on your own, but the true summit is open only with a certified guide, and the gate closes at 2:30 pm.
Black River Gorges National Park is free, with more than 60 km of trails, from short walks to viewpoints near the car parks up to Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire, the island's highest peak. From La Gaulette, boats run to Île aux Bénitiers for snorkelling and a beach day, and Chamarel is close by.
Indian passport holders need no advance visa, and every traveller completes the All-in-One Travel Form before boarding. One Mauritian rupee is worth about two Indian rupees.
Where to stay
This corner is spread out, so plan on a rental car or driver wherever you stay.

Le Morne peninsula
The luxury resort strip, with lagoon views towards the mountain. The honeymoon choice.

La Gaulette
A laid-back village with kitesurfers, local eateries and boats to Île aux Bénitiers.

Black River village
Restaurants and a small marina at the northern end, close to the gorges.
Paying in Le Morne
For the rupee itself, entry rules for Indians, the tourist fee and how much cash to carry, see the Mauritius travel guide.
Resorts and tour operators take cards; village shops, stalls and tips need cash, and ATMs are fewer than on the north coast, so withdraw before you head south. Hotels also collect the €3 a night tourist fee for guests aged 12 and over.
What Le Morne actually costs

Getting around
A rental car is the most practical way to explore, given the distances between the coast, the gorges and Chamarel. Hired drivers and organised tours cover the same ground if you would rather not drive.
Common mistakes in Le Morne
Reading Mauritian rupee prices as Indian rupees
One Mauritian rupee is worth about two Indian rupees, so a MUR 500 menu price is closer to ₹1,000 than ₹500.
Forgetting the All-in-One Travel Form
It is separate from the visa and mandatory for every traveller before boarding. Fill it in on the official safemauritius.govmu.org portal a few days ahead.
Setting off for Le Morne's summit alone
The final section is open only with a certified guide, and the gate closes at 2:30 pm. Unguided, the viewpoint is as far as you go.
Treating Le Morne as just a scenic climb
It is a UNESCO site of maroon history. A guided hike adds that context.
Le Morne and Black River FAQs

The officer at the desk decides how long you can stay, so carry your return ticket, hotel booking and proof of funds, and complete the All-in-One Travel Form before you fly.
