Belle Mare and Trou d'Eau Douce share the east coast: a long white-sand beach lined with five-star resorts and golf courses, next to a working fishing village. It is about an hour from the airport, one of the easier transfers on the island.
Trou d'Eau Douce is the departure point for Île aux Cerfs, the island's best-known offshore excursion. Full-day trips usually run six to eight hours, combining the island's beaches with snorkelling, a barbecue lunch and the Grand River South East waterfall, where monkeys are often seen along the banks. Prices range widely by boat and inclusions, and operator standards vary, so book on recent reviews.
Belle Mare's beach is protected by an offshore reef; swim inside the lagoon, particularly with children. The golf courses here are among the island's best, and Trou d'Eau Douce village, with fishermen landing their catch in the early morning, is worth a wander.
Indian passport holders need no advance visa, and every traveller completes the All-in-One Travel Form before boarding. One Mauritian rupee is worth about two Indian rupees.
