Overview

Grand Baie at a glance

Grand Baie is the liveliest town on the Mauritian coast: restaurants, shopping, bars that run late, and the harbour for catamaran trips to the protected islands off the north coast. It is a little over an hour from the airport, which sits in the south-east, so arrange the transfer before you land. For a quieter base with better snorkelling, Trou aux Biches and Mont Choisy are about 7 km away.

Indian passport holders need no advance visa: entry is granted free on arrival. Every traveller must complete the official All-in-One Travel Form, which includes a health declaration, before boarding. The rupee maths runs the other way from most trips: one Mauritian rupee is worth about two Indian rupees, so double a price to read it in rupees.

The day most visitors build around is a catamaran to the northern islands: Coin de Mire, with its sea cliffs, Île Plate and its lighthouse, and the white sand of Îlot Gabriel, all protected nature reserves. Trips usually run 6.5 to 7.5 hours with snorkelling and a barbecue lunch, and operators charge roughly MUR 2,500 to 5,000 a head. Reviews vary by operator, so book on recent reviews rather than price alone.

On land, La Cuvette is the small, sheltered beach for an easy swim, the Grand Bay shopping centre and La Croisette cover shopping, and the Pamplemousses Botanic Garden, with its giant water lilies, is a short drive inland for MUR 300.

Paying in Grand Baie

For the rupee itself, entry rules for Indians, the tourist fee and how much cash to carry, see the Mauritius travel guide.

Resorts, hotels and larger restaurants take cards without fuss; markets, small vendors, buses and tips run on cash, so carry a modest rupee float. Hotels also collect the €3 a night tourist fee for guests aged 12 and over.

Getting around

Getting around

Grand Baie itself is walkable. For the rest of the island a rental car or hired driver is the practical choice; buses are cheap but slower and thin out in the evening. Taxis rarely use meters, so agree the fare before you set off.

Mauritius drives on the left, as India does.

Things to know

Common mistakes in Grand Baie

Reading Mauritian rupee prices as Indian rupees

One Mauritian rupee is worth about two Indian rupees, so a MUR 500 menu price is closer to ₹1,000 than ₹500.

Forgetting the All-in-One Travel Form

It is separate from the visa and mandatory for every traveller before boarding. Fill it in on the official safemauritius.govmu.org portal a few days ahead.

Booking the catamaran on price alone

Standards vary between operators. Choose on recent reviews, and check what the price includes.

Underestimating the airport transfer

The airport is on the opposite side of the island, a little over an hour away. Book the transfer before you land.
