Barcelona Travel Guide for Indians

A practical guide to Barcelona from India — euros, cards, transport, costs, pickpocket scams and what Indian travellers should know.

Currency Euro (EUR) Cash vs card Mostly cashless

Barcelona at a glance

Currency

Euro (EUR). Carry small notes (€5/€10) for tips and tapas; cards everywhere else.

Cards & ATMs

Visa/Mastercard accepted widely. Use bank ATMs (BBVA, Santander, CaixaBank) — avoid Euronet ATMs which markup heavily.

Visa

Schengen visa via Spain VFS. Allow 4–6 weeks. EES biometric system rolling out in 2026 — first entry takes longer.

Transport

T-casual / T-usual metro card for 10 rides. Aerobús to airport is faster than rideshare in traffic. Walk old-town.

Etiquette

Lunch is 2pm, dinner is 9pm. Catalan greeting "Bon dia". Tipping is small — round up or 5–10%.

Common mistakes

Pickpockets on La Rambla and Metro Line 3 — front pockets only. Refuse DCC. Don't order paella at tourist traps near La Rambla.

Cash vs card in Barcelona Mostly cashless
Cash-heavyFully cashless

Barcelona sits at about 80 on the cash-to-cashless spectrum. Barcelona is largely cashless but cash is still useful at tapas bars, markets and tipping.

Barcelona is a city of late nights and small details. The metro is fast, the food is exceptional outside the obvious tourist streets, and the air is warmer than the Mediterranean numbers suggest in winter.

The two avoidable costs are airport currency exchange (worst rates in Spain) and the Euronet ATMs that dot the old town — bank ATMs of CaixaBank or BBVA give the live rate without the operator surcharge.
