Flic en Flac and Tamarin are on the west coast, which gets the island's best sunsets. Flic en Flac is one of the island's most popular resort areas, with a beach of about 8 km lined with restaurants and bars. Tamarin, a short drive south, is smaller and quieter, with a gap in the reef that makes it the island's surf spot and the base for dolphin trips. The airport is about an hour away.
Spinner and bottlenose dolphins are regularly seen in Tamarin Bay, and swimming with them is legal only with a licensed operator under the Tourism Authority (Dolphin and Whale Watching) Regulations 2012. The rules ban touching or feeding dolphins, keep boats to set distances and limit how many people can swim at once; swimming with whales is prohibited outright. Ask to see the operator's licence, and choose one that keeps its distance. Trips cost roughly MUR 1,500 to 3,000 a person.
Casela, a large nature park a short drive from Flic en Flac, has safari drives, zip lines and animal encounters. The west coast is also good for diving, and Tamarin's surf is best from May to September.
Indian passport holders need no advance visa, and every traveller completes the All-in-One Travel Form before boarding. One Mauritian rupee is worth about two Indian rupees.
Where to stay
All three are within a short drive of each other, and of the Black River Gorges and Chamarel.

Flic en Flac
The livelier base: resorts, restaurants and bars along one of the island's longest beaches.

Tamarin
Smaller and quieter, the surf and dolphin base. Its own beach is less of a draw, and a car helps here.

Wolmar
The resort strip at the southern end of Flic en Flac, quieter than the village and close to Tamarin.
