FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What is the live CAD to INR rate today?+
The live rate is shown at the top of this page and updates every few

seconds at the interbank rate.
What is GIC and how much CAD do I need for it?+
A GIC (Guaranteed Investment Certificate) is a deposit held with a

Canadian bank that demonstrates an international student has enough

funds for one year of living expenses. As of September 2025, the minimum

GIC amount is CAD 22,895, updated from the earlier CAD 20,635. The funds

are deposited before applying for the study permit.
Is the Student Direct Stream (SDS) still open for Indian students?+
No. The Student Direct Stream was discontinued on 8 November 2024. All

Indian students now apply through the regular standard stream. The GIC

is still the most accepted proof of funds even under the standard

stream.
How do I send GIC to a Canadian bank from India?+
Wire transfer (SWIFT) to your participating Canadian bank (ICICI Bank

Canada, Scotiabank, CIBC, RBC, SBI Canada, etc.). Matrix Forex handles

outward remittance under the LRS, with funds typically reaching Canada

within 24 hours.
How many Canadian Dollars can I carry from India?+
USD 3,000 equivalent in cash per trip, roughly CAD 4,200 at current

rates.
Is there TCS on Canadian tuition remittance?+
Above ₹10 lakh per financial year: 0 percent if funded via a Section 80E

education loan, 5 percent on self-funded education (most Canada student

fees fall here). TCS is adjusted against your income tax liability.
Should I tip in Canada?+
Yes, similar to the US. Standard ranges: 15 to 20 percent at restaurants

(often 18 percent default on payment terminals), 10 to 15 percent for

taxis, CAD 2 to CAD 5 per bag for hotel porters.
Can I send tuition fees directly to a Canadian university?+
Yes, via SWIFT wire transfer. You'll need the university's bank details,

your PAN, passport, the student's Letter of Acceptance, and the study

permit approval.
