Mauritius currency in one paragraph

What is the currency of Mauritius?

The currency of Mauritius is the Mauritian rupee, code MUR, written Rs. One rupee is divided into 100 cents, and the Bank of Mauritius issues the notes and coins. The island's rupee has an Indian root: the first notes came in 1876, after a large inflow of Indian rupees that followed Indian immigration. The rate is a managed float, so against the Indian rupee its price changes: on 5 Oct 2026, one Mauritian rupee was worth about ₹2.34 at our selling rate and ₹2.34 at our selling rate. A quote in MUR always means this rupee and not the Indian rupee (INR), which is a separate currency at a different value.

  1. The fifth issue

A series of notes from Rs 5 to Rs 1,000 stays in circulation for about thirteen years.

  2. A new series of seven

  3. Withdrawn after controversy

  4. The replacement

The series that replaces it becomes the design family still in use today. Polymer versions begin on 22 August 2013.

A managed float

A rupee on a managed float

Mauritius lets the market set the price of the rupee, and the Bank of Mauritius steps in to smooth volatility. So the price of a Mauritian rupee in Indian rupees can change from one day to the next.

  • The market sets the rate

Mauritius runs a managed float: the market sets the rate of the rupee, and the Bank of Mauritius steps in to smooth volatility.

  • Managed, not a free float

IMF-based data for 2023 list Mauritius as "other managed", and an older IMF notice calls the regime "managed floating". Neither is a free float.

  • Two central banks, one pact

On 12 March 2025 the Reserve Bank of India and the Bank of Mauritius signed an MoU to promote the Indian rupee and the Mauritian rupee in cross-border transactions.
