Bangladesh currency in one paragraph

What is the currency of Bangladesh?

The currency of Bangladesh is the Bangladeshi taka, code BDT, written Tk or ৳. One taka is divided into 100 poisha. Bangladesh Bank issues the notes, and the taka replaced the Pakistani rupee on 4 March 1972. Since May 2024 it has run on a crawling peg to the US dollar, so against the rupee its price still moves: on 5 Oct 2026, one taka was worth about ₹0.8512 at our selling rate. A price quoted in BDT currency always means this taka, which is used in Bangladesh only.

The Tk 1,000 note is violet. It shows the National Martyrs' Memorial on its front and the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, the national parliament building, on its back. It was one of the first notes of the new series, released on 1 June 2025.

Bangladesh currency notes and coins

Bangladeshi money is mostly notes: nine denominations from Tk 2 to Tk 1,000, plus Tk 1, 2 and 5 coins that are seldom used. A new series began on 1 June 2025 with the Tk 20 and Tk 1,000, and the Tk 10 followed on 3 February 2026 and the Tk 5 on 19 May 2026. The new notes show buildings, monuments and nature, with no human portrait, and old and new designs both stay legal tender. Each note is shown with what it costs in rupees at our selling rate today.

1972 to 1974

A currency issued in a hurry

On 4 March 1972 the taka replaced the Pakistani rupee, and Bangladesh Bank put its first notes into circulation the same day as an emergency issue. Two years later those first notes were no longer legal tender.

  1. A new currency, an emergency issue

The taka becomes the currency of Bangladesh. The first Bangladesh Bank notes, a Tk 1 and a Tk 100 showing a map of Bangladesh, are issued the same day as an emergency issue.

  2. The first poisha coins

The first poisha coins, each a fraction of a taka, appear. They no longer circulate today.

  3. The first notes lose legal tender

The first-issue notes lose their legal tender status. The second series, printed in London by Thomas De La Rue, carries on.

Crawling peg since May 2024

A taka on a crawling peg

Bangladesh Bank has run a crawling peg to the US dollar since May 2024, which moves the central rate in small steps instead of fixing it for good. Against the rupee, the taka's price can still change from one day to the next.

  • A crawling peg since May 2024

On 8 May 2024 Bangladesh Bank introduced a crawling peg to the US dollar. The central rate moves in small steps, so the price of a taka in rupees keeps changing.

  • Rupee trade with India since 2023

India and Bangladesh began settling trade in Indian rupees on 11 July 2023. That arrangement is in rupees, not taka.

  • Retail rates add a margin

Bangladesh Bank publishes official reference rates, and the rate a bank or changer offers adds a margin on top.

Spending taka in Bangladesh

Three things about Bangladeshi money that help on the first day.

Small notes for small payments

Rickshaws, tea stalls, markets and tips are paid in cash, and change is scarce, so small notes are worth asking for when you change money. A Tk 100 note is worth about ₹85.12.

Tk 100 · ₹85.12

Cards in big shops, cash elsewhere

Cards work at upscale hotels, larger restaurants, supermarkets and malls, but not for rickshaws, taxis or intercity buses. ATMs are common in Dhaka and the big cities and fewer outside, and Visa and Mastercard are the practical networks. We could not confirm that UPI, RuPay or Paytm work in Bangladesh.

Changing money on arrival

US dollars are the easiest foreign cash to change. Use airport counters, authorised banks (bring your passport) or licensed changers, avoid street changers and keep your receipts.

Value and history

7 questions
Is the Bangladeshi taka fixed or floating?

Since 8 May 2024 Bangladesh Bank has run a crawling peg to the US dollar, which moves the central rate in small steps instead of holding it fixed. Because the dollar itself moves against the rupee, the taka's price in rupees keeps changing, and every rate on this page carries a date and time.

When did Bangladesh start using the taka?

The taka replaced the Pakistani rupee on 4 March 1972. The first Bangladesh Bank notes, a Tk 1 and a Tk 100 showing a map of Bangladesh, were issued the same day as an emergency issue.

Which Bangladeshi banknotes are in use?

Nine notes: Tk 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1,000. Older designs and the new series, released in stages since 1 June 2025, circulate side by side.

What is on the new Bangladeshi banknotes?

The new notes show buildings, monuments and nature, and none carries a human portrait. Mosques appear on the Tk 5, 10 and 100, the National Martyrs' Memorial on the Tk 1,000, the Kantajew Temple on the Tk 20 and the Ahsan Manzil on the Tk 50. The backs include the Sundarbans on the Tk 100 and the Supreme Court of Bangladesh on the Tk 500.

Are old Bangladeshi notes still valid?

Yes: the older designs remain legal tender and circulate alongside the new series, as Bangladesh Bank clarified on 3 February 2026. The very first notes, from 1972, did not last: they lost their legal tender status on 30 March 1974.

Are coins used in Bangladesh?

Tk 1, 2 and 5 coins exist, but they are seldom seen, and the notes do most of the work. Poisha coins no longer circulate at all.

What is the India link to the Bangladeshi taka?

The link is trade. On 11 July 2023 India and Bangladesh began settling trade in Indian rupees. That arrangement is in rupees, not taka.
