Sigiriya is the rock fortress at the heart of Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle and the single most expensive ticket in the country, which is why its daily budget looks nothing like Ella's. The climb is roughly 1,200 steps past water gardens, 1,500-year-old frescoes, a mirror wall covered in 7th-century graffiti and the carved lion's paws at the final stage.

One thing worth knowing before you book anything: India is a SAARC member, and Sri Lanka's heritage sites charge SAARC nationals a reduced rate. At Sigiriya that is roughly USD 20 against USD 30 to 35 for other foreign visitors, and at the Temple of the Tooth it is LKR 2,500 against LKR 3,000. Carry your passport and ask for the SAARC rate at the counter rather than assuming the posted foreigner price applies to you.

That SAARC discount matters more here than anywhere else on the island. Non-SAARC foreign adults pay roughly USD 30 to 35, while SAARC nationals pay around USD 20, about LKR 6,600. There is no online discount and no group rate, and the ticket is priced in dollars though payable in rupees. Carrying your passport to the counter is worth roughly a third of the price.

Go before 7am if you possibly can. The heat and the crowds both peak by mid-morning and the climb takes 1.5 to 2 hours return, so an early start changes the experience completely. Pidurangala Rock next door is the budget alternative at roughly LKR 500 to 1,000, a shorter but more rugged scramble, and it has the advantage of looking at Sigiriya rather than standing on it.

Dambulla Cave Temple sits 14 to 20km away with five chambers of statues and murals, around LKR 3,000 for foreign adults and less for SAARC nationals, and pairs with Sigiriya as a single full day.
