Ella is Sri Lanka's hill-country base, a small town in tea plantation country reached by what is widely called one of the most scenic rail journeys in Asia. Almost everything worth doing here is a walk and almost all of it is free, which makes it the cheapest stop on a Sri Lanka trip and the one most people wish they had given an extra night.
One thing worth knowing before you book anything: India is a SAARC member, and Sri Lanka's heritage sites charge SAARC nationals a reduced rate. At Sigiriya that is roughly USD 20 against USD 30 to 35 for other foreign visitors, and at the Temple of the Tooth it is LKR 2,500 against LKR 3,000. Carry your passport and ask for the SAARC rate at the counter rather than assuming the posted foreigner price applies to you.
The Nine Arch Bridge is the landmark, a 1921 railway viaduct built entirely from stone, brick and cement without steel because of wartime shortages, reached by a 20 to 30 minute walk from town. Little Adam's Peak is a short hike of roughly 30 to 90 minutes to a viewpoint over Ella Gap and is manageable for most fitness levels. Ella Rock is longer and steeper with inconsistent trail signage, so a guide or a clear map is worth having.
Ravana Falls is a 25-metre waterfall about 20km out with a pool at the base, and climbing above the lower tier is discouraged without a local guide since the rock gets slippery. Several working tea estates near town run tours covering how Ceylon tea is grown and processed, which is the one thing here that reliably costs money.
The Kandy to Ella train is the way to arrive. Reserved seats sell out well ahead in season and the unreserved carriages mean standing for several hours, so book before you reach the station.

Ella is small enough that the only real choice is how far from the trailheads you want to be.
Central Ella
Walkable to the cafes, restaurants and the trailheads for Little Adam's Peak and the Nine Arch Bridge. The practical choice for most stays.
Ella-Passara Road
A quieter stretch outside the town centre and closer to some trailheads, for a more rural setting.
Demodara
Down the valley near the famous railway loop, quieter again and handy if the train is the point.

Getting around
Ella is walkable end to end and the two headline sights, the Nine Arch Bridge and Little Adam's Peak, are both reached on foot from town. Tuk-tuks cover Ravana Falls and the tea estates further out, and fares are negotiated rather than metered.
The train is how most people arrive and leave. The Kandy to Ella stretch climbs through tea country over several hours and reserved seats are worth booking days ahead in season. Demodara, one stop down the line, has the railway loop where the track passes over itself.
Common mistakes in Ella
Arriving without a reserved train seat
Reserved seats on the hill-country line sell out days ahead in season. Without one you stand for several hours on the journey people come to Sri Lanka for.
Hiking Ella Rock without a guide or a clear map
Trail signage is inconsistent and walkers regularly take wrong turns. Little Adam's Peak is the well-marked alternative if you would rather go alone.
Climbing above the lower tier at Ravana Falls
The rock is slippery and it is discouraged without a local guide. The pool at the base is the safe part.
Expecting to pay by card
Ella is the most cash-reliant stop in this series. Draw cash before you arrive, since ATM choice in town is limited.
