Overview

Odense at a glance

Odense is Denmark's third city and the capital of Funen, the island between Copenhagen and Jutland known as the garden of Denmark. The fastest trains from Copenhagen take about 1 hour 11 minutes, so it works as a long day trip or a one- or two-night stop on the way to Aarhus.

Hans Christian Andersen was born here in 1805. H.C. Andersens Hus, the museum of his life and stories, runs on timed entry at about DKK 165, and the ticket includes his childhood home nearby within 30 days. Den Fynske Landsby, an open-air village museum (DKK 145, half price with an Andersen ticket), shows the rural Funen he grew up in; it opens from April to mid-October.

Egeskov Castle, completed in 1554, is one of Europe's best-preserved Renaissance water castles and still the family home of its owners. Its season runs from late March to late October: a castle and garden ticket costs DKK 265 online or DKK 285 at the gate, and a Christmas market fills the November and early December weekends. It is about 30 minutes south of Odense by car, or take the train to Kværndrup and then bus 920 or a 2.5 km walk.

Svendborg, the harbour town at the end of the same railway line, is an easy side trip. Denmark uses the krone, not the euro, and Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa.

Paying here

Paying in Odense

For the krone itself, entry rules for Indians, the VAT refund and how much cash to carry, see the Denmark travel guide.

Odense takes cards almost everywhere. Farm stalls on Funen's country roads often take only cash or MobilePay, a Danish phone app, so keep some krone coins and notes. Choose kroner when a terminal offers a currency choice.

Things to know

Common mistakes in Odense

Planning Egeskov out of season

The castle and gardens open from late March to late October, plus the Christmas market weekends.

Giving Egeskov an afternoon

The castle, gardens and museums fill most of a day.

Assuming euros are accepted

Denmark uses the krone. It is pegged to the euro, but tills price and settle in kroner, and the rare place that takes euros gives a poor rate.

Relying on a card at farm stalls

Roadside stalls often take only cash or MobilePay. Keep some krone coins and notes.
