Lucerne is the postcard version of Switzerland: a covered wooden bridge, a lake ringed by mountains and an old town you can walk in a day. Most of its sights are free, and it is the base for three of the best-known mountain trips in the country, Pilatus, Rigi and Titlis. There is no airport. Direct trains from Zurich Airport take about an hour and cost CHF 27 in second class; from Zurich HB it is about 45 minutes.
The Chapel Bridge, built in the 14th century and Europe's oldest covered wooden bridge, is free to walk and best early, before the tour groups. The Lion Monument, a dying lion carved into the rock in memory of the Swiss Guards killed in Paris in 1792, is free and usually quiet. The Musegg Wall and four of its towers are open from 1 April to 1 November, also free, including the Zyt tower, whose 1535 clock strikes a minute before every other clock in the city.
The mountains are where a Swiss Travel Pass earns its keep. Rigi costs CHF 84 return from Vitznau, Weggis or Goldau and is free with the pass. The Pilatus Golden Round Trip, by boat, the world's steepest cogwheel railway and a cable car, is CHF 119.50, or CHF 42 with the pass. Titlis, above Engelberg about 45 minutes away by train, is CHF 92 return by cable car, or CHF 46 with the pass.
For Indian visitors, Titlis is the Bollywood stop: the summit station has a cut-out of Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol in their Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge roles. The Rotair revolving cable car is closed for maintenance from 10 August to 11 December 2026, and the new Titlis Connect cableway takes visitors to the top meanwhile.

The centre is small, so staying just outside costs little time.
Old Town
Painted facades and small squares, a short walk from the Chapel Bridge and the Musegg Wall. Busy with day-trippers at midday, quiet by evening.
Near the station and lake
A flat walk to the Old Town and the lake piers for boats and mountain trips. The easiest base with luggage.
Kriens
A short bus ride out and cheaper, and home to the valley station of the Pilatus cable car.

Cards and contactless work almost everywhere, mountain railway ticket counters included. Public drinking fountains are all over the Old Town, so refill a bottle rather than buying one.

Getting around
The Old Town, the lake and the station are within 10 to 15 minutes' walk, so most visitors never need a bus in the city. Transport matters for the mountains: boats from the lake piers to Vitznau for Rigi or Alpnachstad for Pilatus, a bus to Kriens for the Pilatus cable car, and the train to Engelberg for Titlis.
A Swiss Travel Pass covers the trains, lake boats and city buses, which is most of what a Lucerne stay needs.

Ruling out a mountain on the standalone fare
With a Swiss Travel Pass, Rigi is free and Pilatus and Titlis are half price or less. Check the pass price before deciding.
Trying two mountains in one day
Each is a full day once travel and time at the top are counted.
Expecting the Musegg Wall in winter
The wall and its towers are open from 1 April to 1 November only.
Assuming the pass covers the Titlis cable car
The train to Engelberg is covered, but the cable car is only half price with the pass.
