Geneva runs on diplomacy and banking, but most of what visitors come for is free: the Jet d'Eau, the lakefront, the Old Town and CERN's Science Gateway. A day and a half covers the city, with a day trip into France if you have longer. Trains from the airport reach Gare Cornavin in about seven minutes.
A Tout Genève ticket costs CHF 3 and covers trains, trams, buses and the yellow lake shuttles for an hour. The free ticket machine in the arrivals hall that older guides mention was withdrawn on 1 January 2022. Instead, hotels, hostels and registered rentals give overnight guests a free Geneva Transport Card for the whole stay.
The Jet d'Eau throws water 140 metres above the lake and is free to see from anywhere on the shore. In the Old Town, St. Pierre Cathedral is free to enter and CHF 7 to climb the north tower's 157 steps. Tram 15 runs to the Palais des Nations and the Broken Chair, a giant sculpture against landmines; tours inside the Palais must be booked on the UN Geneva website. Tram 18 runs to CERN, where the Science Gateway is free but registration is required: book online up to a month ahead, or register on the day if places remain.
Eating out is where Geneva costs more than Zurich. The weekday plat du jour, a set lunch, gets you a restaurant meal for much less than dinner, and Pâquis and Plainpalais have the cheaper Lebanese, Turkish, Sri Lankan and Thai kitchens. France is next door: Annecy is about an hour by coach, Chamonix about an hour and a half, and the Salève cable car just over the border is €18 return.

Pâquis and the lakefront
Closest to the Jet d'Eau and the promenade, walkable to the Old Town, and home to the city's cheaper restaurants.
Old Town
The historic core around St. Pierre Cathedral, on a hill above the lake. Atmospheric, but a climb with luggage.
Near Gare Cornavin
Trains to the airport in minutes and on to the rest of Switzerland and France, and a flat walk to the lake.

Cards and contactless work nearly everywhere. The bigger saving in Geneva is timing: moving your main meal to the weekday plat du jour does more for the budget than any exchange trick.

Getting around
The Old Town, the lake and Cornavin station are within 15 to 20 minutes' walk of each other. The free Geneva Transport Card from your hotel covers trams, buses and the yellow mouettes that cross the lake; without it, a Tout Genève ticket is CHF 3 for an hour.
Tram 15 runs to the Palais des Nations and tram 18 to CERN, about 25 minutes from Cornavin.

Counting on the free airport ticket
It was withdrawn in 2022. Buy a CHF 3 ticket at the machine and collect your Geneva Transport Card at check-in.
Turning up at CERN unregistered
Entry is free, but registration is required. Book online up to a month ahead to be sure of a place.
Eating every main meal at dinner
The weekday plat du jour gets you the same kitchens for much less than the dinner menu.
Leaving your passport behind for a France day trip
Annecy, Chamonix and the Salève are across the border. Your Schengen visa covers them, but carry your passport.
