Kruger National Park is South Africa's flagship Big Five reserve, and one of the few where you can drive your own safari. Plan three or four days: two nights inside the park and a day on the Panorama Route above the Lowveld. Fly from Johannesburg to Skukuza, Kruger Mpumalanga (Nelspruit) or Hoedspruit and hire a car, or drive from Johannesburg in 5 to 6 hours on the N4 (ZAR 210 in tolls, payable by card).
From 1 November 2026 foreign adults pay ZAR 692 for every day in the park and children aged 2 to 11 ZAR 345, up from ZAR 602 and ZAR 300. The International Wild Card (ZAR 4,680 for one person until 31 October 2026) only pays off on a week or more of park days. Book overnight stays early: when the daily quota fills on holidays, only booked guests get in.
Speed limits are 50 km/h on tar and 40 km/h on gravel, you stay in the car except at marked points, and gates are strict: they close at 17:30 from May to July and 18:30 from November to February. SANParks advises against Numbi Gate after attacks and protests on the R538; use Phabeni, Paul Kruger or Malelane.
South Africa's Department of Health classes Kruger as moderate malaria risk and recommends antimalarials for all travellers from September to May; see a travel clinic in India before you fly. Indian passport holders need a visa: flying into Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban or Lanseria, apply online for South Africa's Electronic Travel Authorisation, usually decided within 24 hours; otherwise apply for the free visitor visa through VFS Global in India.
What to see and do
Skukuza is 12 km from Paul Kruger Gate and the Sabi Sand borders the park to the west; the Panorama Route sights are on the escarpment above Hazyview and Graskop.

Skukuza
The largest rest camp, on the Sabie River, with fuel, a shop, a restaurant, car hire, a bank and one of the park's only two ATMs. Southern Kruger has the most reliable sightings; book a sunset or night drive at reception.

The Sabi Sand
Private reserves sharing an unfenced boundary with Kruger, where lodges run open-vehicle drives with off-road tracking and include meals, at a much higher price than the rest camps.

The Three Rondavels
The classic view of the Blyde River Canyon on the Panorama Route, 17 km past Bourke's Luck, on the escarpment above Hazyview.

God's Window
The cliff-top viewpoint 9 km from Graskop; mist can blank it out, so go early. Bourke's Luck Potholes, the river-carved rock cylinders, are on the same road.
Paying in Kruger and the Lowveld
For the rand itself, entry rules for Indians, cash limits and the VAT refund, see the South Africa travel guide, and the ZAR to INR page for today's rate. South African rand load on the Matrix Forex Card, so most travellers carry the card plus a small cash float.
SANParks fuel stations take Visa and Mastercard, as do camp shops, restaurants and receptions. ATMs exist only at Skukuza and Letaba, so arrive with ZAR 500 to 1,000 in cash for tips for rangers and trackers. There is no VAT refund desk at Skukuza or Nelspruit: claim at O.R. Tambo.

Day visitors may not drink alcohol in public areas.
