Overview

Garden Route at a glance

The Garden Route runs along the N2 from Mossel Bay to Tsitsikamma: Knysna's lagoon, Plettenberg Bay's beaches, forest trails and the Storms River Mouth bridges, with the Cango Caves and ostrich farms one pass inland at Oudtshoorn. Tsitsikamma is about 615 km from Cape Town on a mostly single-lane road, so give it four to six days, or fly into George, about 70 km from Knysna, and hire a car there.

A hire car is the only practical way to see it; Uber runs in George, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, Mossel Bay and Oudtshoorn for evenings out. Avoid driving rural roads after dark, and keep doors locked and valuables out of sight. SANParks says rain falls all year here, mostly at night, so pick the season by activity.

From 1 November 2026 Storms River Mouth costs ZAR 422 per foreign adult and the Knysna section ZAR 254. Robberg costs ZAR 80 and has been cashless since 2 February 2026. The Cango Caves charge international visitors ZAR 320 for the Heritage tour and ZAR 420 for the Adventure tour, and the Bloukrans bungy, 216 m from what its operator calls Africa's highest bridge, costs ZAR 1,690 with the skywalk.

Whale boats run in Plettenberg Bay from June to November, ZAR 1,250 per adult; from December to May they become dolphin trips. There is no VAT refund desk at George Airport: claim at Cape Town, Johannesburg or Durban on departure. Indian passport holders need a visa: flying into Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban or Lanseria, apply online for South Africa's Electronic Travel Authorisation, usually decided within 24 hours; otherwise apply for the free visitor visa through VFS Global in India.

Paying here

Paying in Garden Route

For the rand itself, entry rules for Indians, cash limits and the VAT refund, see the South Africa travel guide, and the ZAR to INR page for today's rate. South African rand load on the Matrix Forex Card, so most travellers carry the card plus a small cash float.

Cards work widely, and Robberg and the Storms River forest trails take no cash. Keep ZAR 150 to 250 a day for petrol attendants (stations are full-service), car guards (ZAR 5 to 10) and boat skippers, and draw cash in George, Knysna or Plettenberg Bay rather than at rural garages.
