Overview

Cape Winelands at a glance

Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl sit among mountains and vineyards inland from Cape Town: Stellenbosch is about 35 km from Cape Town International and 50 km from the city centre, Franschhoek about 80 km. Give each town a day, or do one as a day trip from Cape Town. You do not need to drink to enjoy it: gardens, cheese, olive oil and mountain passes fill a day as well.

The Western Cape Government's advice is never to drink and drive, and tastings add up over four estates. The Franschhoek Wine Tram costs ZAR 350 for a hop-on hop-off day on one of five lines (the operator says fares rise from 1 November 2026), and the Vine Hopper in Stellenbosch ZAR 450; tastings are paid at each estate. Uber runs in Stellenbosch.

Standard tastings run from ZAR 80 at La Motte (cashless) and ZAR 105 at Spier to ZAR 190 at Tokara, and Fairview pairs six wines with six cheeses for ZAR 95. Babylonstoren's garden costs ZAR 190 and the Taal Monument in Paarl ZAR 60 for international visitors.

Metrorail runs from Cape Town to Stellenbosch, but the trip takes over two hours with a change, so a car, Uber or a tour is the practical choice. Indian passport holders need a visa: flying into Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban or Lanseria, apply online for South Africa's Electronic Travel Authorisation, usually decided within 24 hours; otherwise apply for the free visitor visa through VFS Global in India.

Paying here

Paying in Cape Winelands

For the rand itself, entry rules for Indians, cash limits and the VAT refund, see the South Africa travel guide, and the ZAR to INR page for today's rate. South African rand load on the Matrix Forex Card, so most travellers carry the card plus a small cash float.

Tasting rooms take cards, and some, La Motte among them, take nothing else. Keep ZAR 150 to 200 a day for car guards in town, petrol attendants and tips; restaurants expect 10 to 15%. Wine you take home counts for the VAT refund: keep the invoices and show the bottles at the Cape Town International counters before check-in, and check India's duty-free alcohol allowance first.
