Overview

Cape Town at a glance

Cape Town packs a mountain, two oceans, penguins and the Winelands into one trip, and most Indian visitors give it three to five days. There is no nonstop flight from India: fly one-stop through Dubai, Doha, Addis Ababa or Istanbul straight into Cape Town International, or connect in Johannesburg. If you change planes in Addis Ababa or Nairobi, keep the layover under 12 hours, or you need a yellow fever certificate on arrival.

The MyCiTi airport bus has been suspended since December 2022, so plan on Uber or Bolt from the airport's e-hailing pick-up area, a metered taxi from the official rank, or a hire car; the City Bowl is 20 to 30 minutes away outside rush hour. In town, MyCiTi buses need a ZAR 40 myconnect card and take no cash or bank cards on board.

From 1 July 2026 the Table Mountain cableway costs ZAR 475 return online and ZAR 530 at the ticket office, and tickets stay valid for 7 days because wind often closes it. Robben Island costs ZAR 600 for foreign adults, with ferries at 09:00, 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00, and Kirstenbosch ZAR 270. From 1 November 2026 Cape Point costs ZAR 592 and Boulders Beach ZAR 282 per foreign adult, and both gates, like Kirstenbosch, take cards only.

The City of Cape Town's safety advice is plain: avoid deserted or dark streets, use accredited transport at night, keep valuables out of sight and never hike alone. Indian passport holders need a visa: flying into Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban or Lanseria, apply online for South Africa's Electronic Travel Authorisation, usually decided within 24 hours; otherwise apply for the free visitor visa through VFS Global in India.

Paying in Cape Town

For the rand itself, entry rules for Indians, cash limits and the VAT refund, see the South Africa travel guide, and the ZAR to INR page for today's rate. South African rand load on the Matrix Forex Card, so most travellers carry the card plus a small cash float.

Cards and phone payments work almost everywhere, and Kirstenbosch, the Cape Point and Boulders gates and MyCiTi take no cash at all. Keep ZAR 200 to 300 a day in coins and small notes for car guards (ZAR 5 to 10), petrol attendants and tips; restaurants expect 10 to 15%. For a VAT refund, take the goods and invoices to the counters in the Cape Town International departure hall before check-in.

Getting around

Getting around

Most visitors use Uber or Bolt, which the City lists among the accredited transport it recommends. MyCiTi buses run from the Civic Centre to the Waterfront, Sea Point, Camps Bay and Hout Bay: ZAR 15 to 32.50 a trip from 1 July 2026, or ZAR 130 for a day pass, on a ZAR 40 myconnect card.

South Africa drives on the left, like India. An Indian licence is valid because it is in English with your photo and signature, but hire companies often ask for an International Driving Permit, so carry one.

Things to know

Common mistakes in Cape Town

Leaving the visa to VFS by default

Adults flying into Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban or Lanseria can apply online for the ETA instead, usually decided within 24 hours. Children under 18 still need the VFS visitor visa.

Planning on the airport bus

The MyCiTi airport service has been suspended since December 2022. Budget for Uber, Bolt or a transfer.

Buying cableway tickets at the window

The office charges ZAR 55 more than the online price, and wind can close the cableway. Buy online; the ticket lasts 7 days.

Taking only cash to the peninsula

The Cape Point and Boulders gates and Kirstenbosch take cards only.
