Krabi is Thailand's limestone-cliff coastline on the Andaman Sea, and Ao Nang is the beach town most Indian travellers actually stay in: the launch point for island-hopping, for the boat-only Railay peninsula, and for some of southern Thailand's best rock climbing. It is a genuinely different pace and scenery from Phuket, quieter and more dramatic, and consistently cheaper day to day.
Krabi International Airport sits roughly 26 to 28km from Ao Nang, about 35 to 45 minutes by road, with no train and no direct fast public bus into Ao Nang itself. The fixed-rate airport taxi is THB 600 for up to three passengers and a minivan is THB 1,050 for up to nine, which usually makes the taxi the practical choice for a couple and the minivan cheaper for a family. A shared shuttle van is THB 150 to 200 per person with hotel stops, and the airport bus via Krabi Town is THB 150.
Railay is reached only by longtail boat from Ao Nang beach, THB 100 one way and THB 200 return, a 10 to 15 minute ride. Boats leave once about eight passengers gather, run roughly 8am to 6pm, and charge more after dark. There are no roads or vehicles on the peninsula at all. The 4 Islands longtail tour covers Chicken Island, Koh Tup's sandbar, Koh Poda and Phra Nang Cave Beach and is usually the first thing visitors book. Tiger Cave Temple is a steep 1,260-step climb to panoramic views, and the Emerald Pool and hot springs are the jungle day trip that needs no boat at all.
Day 1: arrive and settle into Ao Nang, walk the beachfront strip, book tomorrow's boat trip, dinner at the Ao Nang Landmark Night Market. Day 2: a full day on Railay via longtail, the beach, the Phra Nang shrine and the viewpoint hike. Day 3: the 4 Islands tour or a Phi Phi day trip. A fourth day is where Tiger Cave Temple, the Emerald Pool or a Hong Island kayaking trip fits.
Where to stay
Ao Nang is where most trips are based, but Railay is a genuine alternative if the scenery is the point.
Ao Nang
The main tourist strip, walkable and well set up for restaurants, boat tours and nightlife. The default first-timer base and the launch point for Railay.
Krabi Town
More local and budget-friendly, a genuine base for travellers wanting a calmer, more authentic feel, still within reach of Ao Nang and the islands by taxi or songthaew.
Railay
Reachable only by boat, with no roads connecting it to the mainland at all. Worth a night or two if the limestone scenery and rock climbing are the priority, though it is pricier and less convenient for day-tripping elsewhere.
Noppharat Thara and Tubkaek
Quieter alternatives near Ao Nang, calmer beaches within easy reach of the main strip without its busier feel.

Getting around
Songthaews connect Krabi Town and Ao Nang for roughly THB 50 to 70 per person, a cheap and reliable way to move between the two without a private taxi. Within Ao Nang itself, walking covers most of the beachfront strip. Grab and Bolt operate but with less density than Bangkok or Phuket, so a metered or negotiated taxi is often the practical option for anything beyond a short hop.
