Buy Hong Kong DollarsSheung Wan and Sai Ying Pun at a glance
Sheung Wan and Sai Ying Pun, just west of Central, are among the oldest parts of Hong Kong Island: incense-filled temples, antique shops on Hollywood Road, dried-seafood and herbal-medicine stores, and in Sai Ying Pun a younger cafe and restaurant scene. Sheung Wan is one MTR stop from Central, Sai Ying Pun has its own station, and the trams along Des Voeux Road link both.
Man Mo Temple on Hollywood Road, with its giant hanging incense coils, is free and open from 8 am to 6 pm. Below it, the stepped lanes around Tai Ping Shan Street hold small galleries and antique dealers, and Des Voeux Road West is Dried Seafood Street.
The Hong Kong-Macau Ferry Terminal is in Shun Tak Centre, above Sheung Wan MTR (exit D). TurboJet sails to Macau in about an hour for HK$194 on weekdays, HK$212 at weekends and HK$242 from 6:30 pm, between 7:30 am and 10:30 pm, and Cotai Water Jet goes to Taipa, near the Cotai resorts, for similar fares. Indian passport holders can enter Macau visa-free for up to 30 days with no registration, with a passport valid for 90 days beyond the stay, and a Hong Kong PAR that is still valid covers the return.
Indian passport holders can stay 14 days visa-free after the free online Pre-arrival Registration. There is no sales tax, but most restaurants add a 10% service charge and hotels a 3% accommodation tax.
What to see and do
The highlights in Sheung Wan and Sai Ying Pun, and which of them cost anything.

Paying in Sheung Wan and Sai Ying Pun
For the Hong Kong dollar itself, entry rules for Indians, Octopus and how much cash to carry, see the Hong Kong travel guide, and our guide to the Hong Kong dollar against the rupee.
Octopus or a contactless Visa or Mastercard pays on the MTR, including the Airport Express; RuPay is not on the MTR's list of accepted cards. A standard Octopus costs HK$200, including a HK$50 refundable deposit, and the Tourist Octopus sold at the airport costs HK$170, of which HK$128 is usable value. The wet market, the dried-seafood shops and the antique stalls here are more comfortable with cash, so keep HK$500 to HK$1,000 in small notes, and when a terminal or ATM offers rupees, choose Hong Kong dollars.

Common mistakes in Sheung Wan and Sai Ying Pun
Flying without a PAR slip
Airlines check the printed, signed Pre-arrival Registration slip at boarding and turn away passengers without one. It is free and usually approved instantly online.
Assuming Macau follows Hong Kong's rules
Macau needs no PAR and gives Indians 30 days visa-free, but the passport must be valid for 90 days beyond your stay, and you clear immigration on both sides.
Picking the wrong Macau ferry
TurboJet mostly sails to the Outer Harbour, near the old city and Senado Square; Cotai Water Jet goes to Taipa, near the Cotai resorts, and its night fares start earlier.
Relying on cards in the old shops
Dried-seafood, herbal and antique shops and the wet market often prefer cash. Carry small notes.
