Buy Hong Kong DollarsLantau Island at a glance
Lantau Island, nearly twice the size of Hong Kong Island, is Hong Kong's green side: mostly country park, with the Big Buddha, the fishing village of Tai O and Hong Kong Disneyland. The airport sits beside it, and the MTR Tung Chung line reaches Tung Chung, the island's gateway town, in about 32 minutes from Hong Kong station (HK$24.30 by Octopus).
The Ngong Ping 360 cable car climbs 5.7 km from Tung Chung to Ngong Ping in 25 minutes: HK$295 return in a standard cabin, HK$365 in a glass-floored Crystal cabin and HK$545 in a Crystal+ cabin, from 10 am to 6 pm on weekdays and 9 am to 6:30 pm at weekends and holidays. Queues can be long, so book online; bus 23 from Tung Chung takes about 50 minutes instead for HK$20.40, or HK$37 on Sundays and holidays.
The Big Buddha, 34 metres tall with its base and reached by 268 steps, is free to visit from 10 am to 5:30 pm, and Po Lin Monastery beside it serves vegetarian meals from 11:30 am to 4:30 pm. Bus 21 runs on to Tai O in about 18 minutes for HK$7.90, where stilt houses line the creek and short boat rides look for Chinese white dolphins. Hong Kong Disneyland, with one-day tickets from about HK$669 to HK$939 depending on the date, needs a day of its own.
Indian passport holders can stay 14 days visa-free after the free online Pre-arrival Registration. There is no sales tax, but most restaurants add a 10% service charge and hotels a 3% accommodation tax.

Paying in Lantau Island
For the Hong Kong dollar itself, entry rules for Indians, Octopus and how much cash to carry, see the Hong Kong travel guide, and our guide to the Hong Kong dollar against the rupee.
Octopus and contactless cards work on the MTR and the cable car and in Tung Chung and Disneyland, but Tai O's stalls and boat operators prefer cash, so carry small notes. Buses take Octopus or exact cash. When a terminal or ATM offers rupees, choose Hong Kong dollars.

Getting around

Ferries from Central also run to Mui Wo (35 to 40 minutes, HK$33.50, or HK$48.50 on Sundays) and Discovery Bay (about 25 minutes, HK$55.80). On the island, New Lantau buses link the sights, and the cable car doubles as transport to Ngong Ping.

Common mistakes in Lantau Island
Flying without a PAR slip
Airlines check the printed, signed Pre-arrival Registration slip at boarding and turn away passengers without one. It is free and usually approved instantly online.
Leaving the cable car queue to chance
Queues can run over an hour on busy days. Book online, or take bus 23 from Tung Chung.
Squeezing Disneyland into the same day
The Big Buddha and Tai O fill a day; Disneyland needs another.
Carrying no cash in Tai O
Smaller stalls and the dolphin boats prefer cash.
