Overview

Central and Admiralty at a glance

Central and Admiralty are the business heart of Hong Kong Island: the skyline, the Peak Tram and the grand harbourfront hotels. The Airport Express ends at Hong Kong station in Central, 24 minutes from the airport for HK$120 by Octopus or contactless card, which makes this the most convenient base for a first visit, and the most expensive.

Most visitors come for Victoria Peak. The Peak Tram, running since 1888, costs HK$116 return every day, or HK$182 with the Sky Terrace 428 viewing deck (HK$155 before noon or after 7 pm). Queues are longest on weekend afternoons, so go early or after dark, and note that Octopus pays at the ticket counter but does not open the tram gates.

Back at sea level, Hong Kong Park in Admiralty is free, and every night at 8 pm the free, 10-minute Symphony of Lights plays across the skyline. The Star Ferry from the Central piers to Tsim Sha Tsui costs HK$5 on the upper deck on weekdays and HK$6.50 at weekends.

Indian passport holders can stay 14 days visa-free after the free online Pre-arrival Registration. Cathay Pacific flies nonstop from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad, and Air India and IndiGo from Delhi. There is no sales tax, but most restaurants add a 10% service charge and hotels a 3% accommodation tax.

Central is walkable and stitched together by footbridges, and the MTR covers the rest, with Octopus or a contactless Visa or Mastercard paying at the gates. Things to know

Common mistakes in Central and Admiralty

Flying without a PAR slip

Airlines check the printed, signed Pre-arrival Registration slip at boarding and turn away passengers without one. It is free and usually approved instantly online.

Tapping Octopus at the Peak Tram gate

Octopus does not open the gates. Buy a ticket at the counter, where Octopus can pay, or online.

Going up the Peak on a weekend afternoon

That is when the queues are longest. Go early in the day, or after dark for the night view.

Paying in rupees at the card machine

When a terminal or ATM offers to charge you in rupees, choose Hong Kong dollars. The rupee option lets the operator set its own rate.

Questions

Not for stays of up to 14 days, but you must complete the free online Pre-arrival Registration (PAR) with the Immigration Department before you travel. Approval is usually instant. It is valid for six months and several visits, your passport needs at least six months' validity, and a new passport needs a new PAR.

No. Hong Kong has its own immigration, so a Mainland China visa does not let you enter Hong Kong, and Hong Kong entry does not cover the Mainland.
