Buy Korean WonGyeongju at a glance
Gyeongju was the capital of the Silla kingdom for nearly a thousand years, and it has so many temples, tombs and UNESCO sites in one small city that Koreans call it the museum without walls. One day covers the centre and two lets you add Bulguksa without rushing. It is half an hour from Busan, which makes it the easiest heritage day trip in the country.
The KTX stops at Singyeongju Station, outside the historic centre, around 20 minutes by taxi or longer by local bus. From Busan the ride is about 30 minutes; from Seoul it is about 2 hours, at a little under KRW 50,000 before KTX fares were cut by about 10% on average on 1 September 2026. Daereungwon, the tomb park in the middle of town, is free to walk, with 23 grassy Silla burial mounds; Cheonmachong, the one you can step inside, costs KRW 3,000. Cheomseongdae, considered Asia's oldest surviving observatory, is a free, short walk away. Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond cost KRW 3,000 and are best after dark, when the pavilions light up over the water. Bulguksa Temple and Seokguram Grotto, both UNESCO World Heritage sites, are 30 to 40 minutes out of town by bus 10 or 11, and Bulguksa has charged no admission since May 2023.

For one night, stay central; Bomun only makes sense if you want a resort hotel and plan to drive or taxi.
Hwangnidan-gil
Cafes, guesthouses and restaurants a short walk from the tomb park and Cheomseongdae. The best base for a walking visit.
Gyochon Village
Restored hanok houses by the Woljeonggyo bridge, with traditional guesthouse stays near Donggung Palace.
Bomun Lake
The resort district east of town with the larger hotels, better placed for Bulguksa than for the centre.

Before you fly it is worth reading which ATMs in South Korea take an Indian card, since many domestic machines do not.
Cards work at the ticketed sights and most restaurants, and T-money covers the local buses. Keep some cash for small snack stalls and the older shops around the tomb park.

Getting around
The centre is flat and walkable, and hiring a bicycle is a popular way to link the tomb park, Cheomseongdae, Gyochon and Donggung Palace. Taxis are cheap for the hop from Singyeongju Station.
Bulguksa and Seokguram sit in the hills to the east. Buses 10 and 11 reach Bulguksa in 30 to 40 minutes, and Seokguram is a further ride uphill, so treat the pair as a half-day trip.
Common mistakes in Gyeongju
Assuming the KTX drops you in town
It arrives at Singyeongju, outside the historic centre. Budget a taxi or a bus ride in.
Treating Bulguksa as a quick add-on
It is 30 to 40 minutes out of town, and Seokguram is further uphill. Give the two a half day.
Seeing Donggung Palace only by day
It is at its best after dark, when the lit pavilions reflect in Wolji Pond. Save it for the evening.
Climbing the burial mounds
It is prohibited and fined. The mounds are royal tombs, not viewing points.
