Busan is South Korea's second city and its seaside counterpoint to Seoul: beaches, a working harbour, seafood markets and temples in the hills. Most visitors add two or three days onto a Seoul trip, and many carry on to Jeju from here. The same Korean visa covers Busan as Seoul.
The KTX from Seoul Station to Busan Station takes from about 2 hours 15 minutes. The standard fare fell from KRW 59,800 to KRW 54,400 on 1 September 2026, when Korail merged the KTX and SRT networks; the cut is planned for three years rather than guaranteed. Flying Gimpo to Gimhae rarely saves time once both airport transfers are counted. Busan Station sits on subway Line 1, a few stops from Nampo and Jagalchi Market.
Haeundae is the big, resort-lined beach and Gwangalli the quieter one, with the Gwangan Bridge lit up at night. Gamcheon Culture Village, a hillside of painted houses first built by Korean War refugees, is free to walk; take a taxi up and walk down. Jagalchi, the country's largest seafood market, and the sprawling Gukje Market sit side by side near Nampo. Taejongdae has cliffside coastal walks on Yeongdo Island, Beomeosa is a working temple in the northern hills, and Spa Land in Shinsegae Centum City is the city's best-known jjimjilbang.
For Jeju, the quick option is a flight of about an hour from Gimhae Airport; overnight ferries also run, but sailings change with the season.
Where to stay
Two or three nights rarely justify changing hotels; pick by whether you want the beach or the transit hub on your doorstep.
Seomyeon
Busan's central interchange, on two subway lines with fast links to the station, the beaches and the old town. The practical all-rounder.
Haeundae
Beachfront hotels, sea views and a lively evening scene. Best if the trip is built around the coast.
Nampo and Jagalchi
The old town by the harbour, walkable to Jagalchi, Gukje Market and BIFF Square. Closest to Busan Station and with the most local feel.

Before you fly it is worth reading which ATMs in South Korea take an Indian card, since many domestic machines do not.
Busan is as card-friendly as Seoul in hotels, restaurants and malls, and the same T-money card works here without a new one. Cash matters more at Jagalchi and Gukje markets and at the smaller seafood stalls, and convenience-store T-money top-ups are cash only.

Getting around
The subway runs four numbered lines plus the Busan-Gimhae Light Rail and the Donghae Line. A ride costs KRW 1,600 for one section or KRW 1,800 for two on a transit card. Busan stretches along the coast, so Haeundae to Nampo is a long ride; plan each day around one side of the city.

Common mistakes in Busan
Flying from Seoul instead of taking the KTX
Once Gimpo, check-in and the Gimhae transfer are counted, the flight rarely wins. The KTX is simpler and now KRW 54,400 standard.
Doing Busan as a day trip from Seoul
It is over two hours each way. An overnight gets far more out of the same travel time.
Walking up to Gamcheon
It is a steep hillside. Take a taxi to the top and walk down through the alleys.
Underestimating the distances
Haeundae to Nampo is a proper subway trip. Group the beaches on one day and the old town on another.
Assuming a daily Jeju ferry
Sailings vary with the season. Check before building a tight itinerary around one, or fly the hour from Gimhae.
