Overview

Trondheim at a glance

Trondheim, Norway's third city and its first capital, is calmer than Oslo or Bergen: a compact university town on the Nidelva river, built around Nidaros Cathedral. Work on the cathedral began in 1070 over the grave of St Olav, the king who became Norway's patron saint, and was completed around 1300. It is the world's northernmost medieval cathedral, and still the end of the St Olav pilgrim ways from Oslo and from Sweden.

The cathedral costs NOK 140, or NOK 260 with the Archbishop's Palace museum and the Crown Regalia, the crowns of Norway's king and queen; ages 8 to 25 pay half. The 172-step tower climb runs only in summer, for NOK 70 more. Out of season the cathedral keeps short hours (in October 2026, weekdays 9 am to 2 pm), so check before you go.

SJ trains from Oslo take about 6 hours 40 minutes, with a night train too, and SAS and Norwegian fly in 55 minutes, about 20 to 25 times a day. From Værnes airport, SJ's hourly train reaches the city in about 40 minutes on an ordinary NOK 50 AtB ticket, and the Værnesekspressen bus meets every flight. There is no direct flight from India; most Indian visitors connect through Oslo.

Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa: apply on UDI's Application Portal Norway and give fingerprints at a VFS Global centre in India; the fee is €90 and decisions normally take 15 days.

What to see and do

The centre, the cathedral and Bakklandet are a short walk apart; Kristiansten is a steep climb up from Bakklandet.

Bakklandet, Trondheim

Bakklandet

The old working-class quarter across the Old Town Bridge (Gamle Bybro), now cafés and painted wooden houses along the Nidelva. The classic Trondheim stroll, and a good base.

The Archbishop's Palace, Trondheim

The Archbishop's Palace

Beside the cathedral, the medieval seat of Norway's archbishops, with a museum of finds from the site and the Crown Regalia. Both are on the NOK 260 combined ticket.

Kristiansten Fortress, Trondheim

Kristiansten Fortress

A hilltop fortress east of the centre, free to walk around, with the best view over the city and the fjord. The museum in the keep opens only in summer.

Røros, Trondheim

Røros

The old copper-mining town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980, about 2 hours 35 minutes by SJ train from Trondheim, with three trains a day. Its streets of wooden houses make a long day trip or an overnight stop.

Paying here

Paying in Trondheim

For the krone itself, entry rules for Indians, the VAT refund and the cash-declaration limit, see the Norway travel guide, and the NOK to INR page for today's rate. Norway uses the krone, not the euro, and runs almost entirely on cards: kroner load on the Matrix Forex Card, so most travellers carry the card plus a small cash float.

Cards and phone payments work everywhere. Buy AtB bus tickets in the app: a single is NOK 50 and lasts 90 minutes.

Getting around

The centre is compact and walkable, and AtB's city buses cover the rest on a NOK 50 single valid for 90 minutes. From the airport, take SJ's hourly train (about 40 minutes, same ticket) or the Værnesekspressen bus (25 to 30 minutes).

Things to know

Common mistakes in Trondheim

Applying for the visa too late

Apply up to six months ahead and at least four weeks before you travel. Decisions normally take 15 days but can take up to 45, plus courier time outside Delhi.

Planning a winter tower climb

The cathedral tower opens only in summer, and the cathedral itself keeps short hours out of season.

Buying the cathedral ticket alone

For NOK 120 more than the NOK 140 cathedral ticket, the NOK 260 combined ticket adds the Archbishop's Palace museum and the Crown Regalia.

Paying in rupees at the card machine

When a terminal or ATM offers to charge you in rupees, choose kroner. The rupee option lets the operator set its own rate.
