Overview

Tromsø at a glance

Tromsø, about 350 km north of the Arctic Circle, is northern Norway's main city and its best-known base for the Northern Lights, which show on clear dark nights from September to early April. From about 27 November to 15 January the sun does not rise; from about 20 May to 22 July it does not set. The centre sits on the island of Tromsøya, linked by bridge to the Arctic Cathedral and the Fjellheisen cable car on the mainland side.

Fjellheisen climbs to the Storsteinen ledge, 421 m up, in about four minutes, from 9 am to midnight, for NOK 645 return (NOK 415 one way). It is the easiest way to look for the lights without a tour, but it stops in strong wind, and building work on a new lift means there is no parking at the lower station: take bus 26.

Whale-watching trips run from late October to January, but the orcas and humpbacks follow the herring, which has wintered near Skjervøy, three to four hours north, since 2017-18. Trips are full days, and in winter 2025-26 only about a third as much herring arrived, so ask an operator where it goes and what happens if no whales are seen.

SAS and Norwegian fly from Oslo in 1 hour 50 minutes, about 12 times a day, and several European cities have direct winter flights, but none come from India. The airport bus costs NOK 125 one way and takes about 20 minutes. Tromsø plans a 3% tax on overnight stays from 1 January 2027, if the government approves it. Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa: apply on UDI's Application Portal Norway and give fingerprints at a VFS Global centre in India; the fee is €90 and decisions normally take 15 days.

What to see and do

The centre, the harbour, Polaria and Tromsø Cathedral are a short walk apart on Tromsøya; the Arctic Cathedral and Fjellheisen are across the bridge.

Fjellheisen and Storsteinen, Tromsø

Fjellheisen and Storsteinen

The cable car to the 421 m ledge above the city, open until midnight, NOK 645 return. The ledge is far colder and windier than the city, so dress for it.

Polaria, Tromsø

Polaria

The Arctic experience centre, in a building shaped like ice floes toppled against each other, with polar exhibits and an aquarium. NOK 395 for adults; open daily 10 am to 5 pm.

Tromsø Cathedral, Tromsø

Tromsø Cathedral

In the centre, the only Protestant cathedral in Norway built of wood (1861), and the world's northernmost Protestant cathedral. Across the bridge, the Arctic Cathedral (NOK 90) holds short organ concerts on autumn Fridays.

Whale watching, Tromsø

Whale watching

Full-day boat trips from late October to January, three to four hours north to the fjords near Skjervøy, where the whales feed on herring. Sightings depend on the herring, which was much thinner in 2025-26.

Paying here

Paying in Tromsø

For the krone itself, entry rules for Indians, the VAT refund and the cash-declaration limit, see the Norway travel guide, and the NOK to INR page for today's rate. Norway uses the krone, not the euro, and runs almost entirely on cards: kroner load on the Matrix Forex Card, so most travellers carry the card plus a small cash float.

Cards and phone payments work everywhere, including buses. Book Northern Lights and whale trips online in advance, and read the terms for cancellations and for nights when the sky stays cloudy.

The centre is walkable. Svipper city buses cover the rest, including lines 40 and 42 to the airport and line 26 to Fjellheisen; from mid-November to March an electric shuttle also runs to the cable car. Most Northern Lights and whale trips include transport from the centre.

Things to know

Common mistakes in Tromsø

Applying for the visa too late

Apply up to six months ahead and at least four weeks before you travel. Decisions normally take 15 days but can take up to 45, plus courier time outside Delhi.

Banking on one night for the lights

Clouds decide everything. Give the lights two or three nights, and pick a tour that drives to clearer skies.

Expecting whales near the city

The whales feed near Skjervøy, three to four hours away. Trips take a full day, and sightings depend on the herring.

Underdressing on Storsteinen

The ledge is 421 m up and much colder and windier than the city. Layer up, and check the lift is running before you go.
