Overview

Oslo at a glance

Oslo, Norway's capital, is compact and walkable, with its museums, harbour and fjord close together, and it is expensive: a casual meal costs about NOK 180 to 300, or ₹1,820 to ₹3,030. Two or three days covers the centre, the museums on the Bygdøy peninsula and Vigeland Park. Several of the best sights are free: Vigeland Park (open around the clock), the sloping roof of the Opera House, and City Hall, whose murals you can see from Monday to Saturday, 9 am to 4 pm.

The Viking Ship Museum on Bygdøy is closed: it is being rebuilt as the Museum of the Viking Age and is due to reopen in 2027, so the Oseberg and Gokstad ships cannot be seen until then. The Historical Museum in the centre (NOK 160) shows Viking Age finds in its VIKINGR exhibition, and Viking Planet offers a virtual-reality version. On Bygdøy, the Fram Museum (NOK 180) holds the polar ship Fram.

There is no direct flight from India: Gulf and European airlines connect to Oslo Gardermoen through Dubai, Istanbul and the European hubs. From the airport, Flytoget takes 19 minutes to Oslo S for NOK 276, and you can tap a contactless card at its readers; Vy's regional trains take about 23 minutes for NOK 134 on an app ticket, and the Oslo Pass covers them.

A 24-hour Oslo Pass costs NOK 580 (48 hours NOK 845, 72 hours NOK 995) and covers more than 30 museums, including MUNCH, the National Museum, the Fram and the Historical Museum, plus public transport. It pays off on a day with two or three paid museums. Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa: apply on UDI's Application Portal Norway and give fingerprints at a VFS Global centre in India; the fee is €90 and decisions normally take 15 days.

Best places

What to see and do

The centre, the harbour and the Opera House are a short walk apart. Vigeland Park is a tram ride west, and Bygdøy's museums a bus ride, or in summer a ferry ride, across the harbour.

Vigeland Park, Oslo

Vigeland Park

Gustav Vigeland's sculpture park inside Frogner Park, free and open around the clock. The Vigeland Museum next door costs NOK 120.

The Fram Museum, Oslo

The Fram Museum

On Bygdøy, the polar ship Fram, which carried Nansen into the Arctic and Amundsen to the Antarctic, displayed whole inside the museum. NOK 180 for adults, or free with the Oslo Pass.

Oslo City Hall, Oslo

Oslo City Hall

Free to enter, Monday to Saturday, 9 am to 4 pm. The main hall's murals show Norwegian life and history, and the Nobel Peace Prize is presented here each December. It closes on some days for official events, so check before you go.

A fjord sauna, Oslo

A fjord sauna

Floating saunas on the harbour, with a ladder straight into the fjord: a 90-minute drop-in at Oslo Badstuforening costs NOK 260, and KOK's shared saunas start at about NOK 270.

Paying here

Paying in Oslo

For the krone itself, entry rules for Indians, the VAT refund and the cash-declaration limit, see the Norway travel guide, and the NOK to INR page for today's rate. Norway uses the krone, not the euro, and runs almost entirely on cards: kroner load on the Matrix Forex Card, so most travellers carry the card plus a small cash float.

Cards and phone payments work almost everywhere, but you cannot tap a card on Ruter's buses, trams and metro: buy tickets in the Ruter app first. Staffed shops must also accept cash, up to NOK 20,000, so a small float is a workable backup.

Getting around

Ruter's metro, trams, buses and local ferries share one ticket: NOK 46 for a single in zone 1, NOK 137 for 24 hours and NOK 379 for seven days, bought in the Ruter app. Tickets are not sold on board trams or the metro, and contactless cards do not work at the readers. The centre itself is easy on foot.

From the airport, Vy's regional train (NOK 134, about 23 minutes) costs half as much as Flytoget and is covered by the Oslo Pass; Flytoget is not.

Things to know

Common mistakes in Oslo

Applying for the visa too late

Apply up to six months ahead and at least four weeks before you travel. Decisions normally take 15 days but can take up to 45, plus courier time outside Delhi.

Planning around the Viking ships

The Viking Ship Museum is closed until it reopens as the Museum of the Viking Age in 2027. See the Historical Museum or Viking Planet instead.

Tapping a card on the tram

Contactless cards do not work on Ruter's buses, trams and metro, and trams and the metro sell no tickets on board. Buy in the Ruter app first.

Paying in rupees at the card machine

When a terminal or ATM offers to charge you in rupees, choose kroner. The rupee option lets the operator set its own rate.
