Sydney is where most first Australia trips from India start: Air India flies nonstop from Delhi every day, and Qantas plans to resume Bengaluru flights from 25 October 2026. The harbour, the Opera House and the beaches fill three or four days before you fly on to Melbourne, about an hour and a half away, or north to the reef.
The Opera House's one-hour tour costs AUD 50 booked ahead, AUD 55 on the day. Walking across the Harbour Bridge on its eastern footpath costs nothing, while BridgeClimb starts from AUD 325. Taronga Zoo, a short ferry ride from Circular Quay, costs AUD 57 at the gate or from AUD 51.30 online, and the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk, 6 km and two to three hours, is free.
Transport is pay-as-you-go: tap a contactless Visa, Mastercard or Amex card or a phone on the Opal readers for the same fares as an Opal card, capped at AUD 19.30 a day from Monday to Thursday, AUD 9.65 from Friday to Sunday and on public holidays, and AUD 50 a week. The Manly ferry costs AUD 9.20, and trains to Katoomba in the Blue Mountains take 1.5 to 2 hours.
Indian passport holders need a Visitor visa (subclass 600), AUD 250 from 1 July 2026, and since 1 October 2026 card surcharges are banned on eftpos, Visa and Mastercard, so the displayed price is what you pay.
Where to stay
The CBD is walkable, and trains, ferries and buses reach the rest.

Circular Quay and The Rocks
Closest to the Opera House, the Harbour Bridge and the ferries, with The Rocks Markets at weekends; the easiest first-time base, and the priciest.

Darling Harbour
A good mid-range base on the western edge of the CBD, by the aquarium and the Maritime Museum, a short walk or light-rail ride from the centre.

Bondi
For a beach-first stay: bus 333 runs from Circular Quay to Bondi Beach, and the coastal walk to Coogee starts here.
Paying in Sydney
For the Australian dollar itself, the visa, the Tourist Refund Scheme and how much cash to carry, see the Australia travel guide and our page on the Australian dollar.
Cards and phones work almost everywhere, including market stalls. Bank ATMs charge foreign cards a fee on top of your Indian bank's, so make fewer, larger withdrawals. Carry AUD 150 to 250 in cash as a backup, and when a terminal or ATM offers rupees, choose Australian dollars.
What Sydney actually costs
Set the length and style of your trip to see what to budget, in Australian dollars and Indian rupees.
Indicative, excluding international flights and accommodation, per person per day. Converted at the verified mid-market rate on 3 October 2026, A$1 ≈ ₹66.99, not a Matrix board rate.
Budget roughly ₹4,690 to ₹17,420 per person per day on the ground, excluding flights and accommodation.

Getting around
Opal readers on trains, the Metro, buses, ferries and light rail take contactless Visa, Mastercard and Amex cards and phones at the same fares as an Opal card, so you can skip the card if international transactions are switched on. The daily cap is AUD 19.30 from Monday to Thursday and AUD 9.65 from Friday to Sunday and on public holidays, and the weekly cap is AUD 50.
From the airport, the train reaches the city in about 13 minutes for AUD 22.94 at peak times, including the AUD 18.61 station access fee. Bus 420 to Mascot station and the train from there costs about AUD 5.60 at peak, and a fixed-fare taxi trial charges AUD 60 to the CBD, tolls included.
Common mistakes in Sydney
Packing Indian food without declaring it
Declare all food on arrival or bin it. Cumin, coriander and fennel seeds, dried chillies and raw rice are not allowed in, ghee and milk sweets are likely to be refused, and fines run up to AUD 7,280.
Forgetting the airport station fee
The airport train adds an AUD 18.61 access fee to the fare. Bus 420 to Mascot and the train from there avoids it.
Planning the big travel days midweek
The daily cap halves from Friday to Sunday, AUD 9.65 against AUD 19.30, so save ferry and beach days for the weekend.
Squeezing in the Blue Mountains
Katoomba is 1.5 to 2 hours each way by train. Give it a full day, or skip it on a three-day trip.
