Overview

Hobart at a glance

Hobart, Tasmania's capital and Australia's second-oldest city, is a compact waterfront town on the Derwent River beneath kunanyi / Mount Wellington, with MONA, the Salamanca Market and a slower pace. Two or three days covers it, and it is the base for wider Tasmania road trips. There is no nonstop flight from India; most visitors fly in from Melbourne or Sydney.

Public transport in Tasmania is free until 30 June 2027: Metro buses, intercity coaches and the River Derwent ferry, with no fare or card needed. The exceptions are SkyBus from the airport, AUD 24 one way, card only and about 30 minutes, and the Bruny Island ferry. A taxi from the airport costs about AUD 50 to 60.

MONA charges visitors from outside Tasmania AUD 39, takes cards only and opens from Thursday to Monday, closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays until 30 June 2027; its ferry from Brooke Street Pier takes 25 to 30 minutes. The Salamanca Market runs on Saturdays from 8:30 am to 3 pm, the Port Arthur Historic Site costs AUD 55 with a harbour cruise, and MONA's winter festival, Dark Mofo, returns in June 2027.

Indian passport holders need a Visitor visa (subclass 600), AUD 250 from 1 July 2026, and since 1 October 2026 card surcharges are banned on eftpos, Visa and Mastercard, so the displayed price is what you pay. Winters, from June to August, are cold by Indian standards.
