Cairns is the main gateway to the Great Barrier Reef: a small, walkable tropical city whose trips are built around a reef day and a Kuranda rainforest day. The airport is only 7 km from the centre, and from 23 November 2026 a 50-cent Translink bus, route 100, will link the two every 30 minutes; until then, a taxi costs about AUD 25 to 32.
Budget the reef as its own line: full-day outer reef trips cost about AUD 270 to 350, with Great Adventures at AUD 312, Sunlover at AUD 317 and Reef Magic from AUD 325, the AUD 8.50 reef charge usually included. Green Island trips start at AUD 112 and Fitzroy Island at AUD 109.
For Kuranda, the Scenic Railway costs AUD 58 one way and the Skyrail cableway AUD 74; train up and Skyrail down costs AUD 145.50. Until 1 November 2026 Skyrail runs only a short loop because of upgrade works, and the railway closes from 2 to 6 November. Daintree and Cape Tribulation day tours cost about AUD 240 to 260.
Stinger season, when box jellyfish and irukandji are about, runs from November to May, so reef operators hand out stinger suits; the Esplanade Lagoon in town is free and lifeguarded. Indian passport holders need a Visitor visa (subclass 600), AUD 250 from 1 July 2026, and since 1 October 2026 card surcharges are banned on eftpos, Visa and Mastercard, so the displayed price is what you pay.
Where to stay
Most reef and rainforest tours pick up from hotels in Cairns, so you rarely need a car.

Cairns CBD and the Esplanade
Waterfront and walkable to the Reef Fleet Terminal, where most reef boats leave, with the widest choice of hotels and restaurants; the default base.

Palm Cove
A quieter beach village about 25 minutes north; most reef and Kuranda tours still pick up from here.

Port Douglas
67 km north, about an hour by car: its own reef gateway, closer to the Daintree and more upmarket.
Paying in Cairns

Cards work almost everywhere, including reef-tour bookings. Carry AUD 150 to 250 in cash as a backup, and when a terminal or ATM offers rupees, choose Australian dollars.

Common mistakes in Cairns
Under-budgeting the reef
A full-day outer reef trip costs about AUD 270 to 350, the biggest single cost of a Cairns trip.
Going to the reef on arrival day
After a long flight from India, a full day on the water is hard going. Rest a day first.
Skipping the stinger suit
From November to May, wear the suit the operator provides; there is some risk all year.
Planning Kuranda for early November
Skyrail runs only a short loop until 1 November 2026, and the railway closes from 2 to 6 November.
