Overview

Adelaide at a glance

Adelaide, South Australia's capital, is a calm, walkable city ringed by parkland, with the Barossa Valley and Adelaide Hills wine regions on its doorstep. The airport is only about 7 km from the centre, and two or three days covers the city, plus a day for the Barossa. There is no nonstop flight from India, so most Indian visitors connect through an Asian or Gulf hub, or fly in from Sydney or Melbourne.

Adelaide Metro is cashless: tap a Visa, Mastercard or Amex card or a phone, or use a metroCARD. Since 1 October 2026 a two-hour ticket costs AUD 4.75 at peak times, which include all of Saturday, and AUD 2.70 off-peak. Trams are free within the CBD and in Glenelg, the City Connector buses are free, and the J1 and J2 buses from the airport take 18 to 26 minutes.

The Central Market is closed on Sundays and Mondays, the Art Gallery of South Australia is free, and Barossa day tours with lunch cost about AUD 159 to 189. Festival season runs from late February to March: the Fringe from 19 February to 21 March 2027, the Adelaide Festival from 26 February to 14 March and WOMADelaide from 5 to 8 March.

Indian passport holders need a Visitor visa (subclass 600), AUD 250 from 1 July 2026, and since 1 October 2026 card surcharges are banned on eftpos, Visa and Mastercard, so the displayed price is what you pay.

Paying in Adelaide

For the Australian dollar itself, the visa, the Tourist Refund Scheme and how much cash to carry, see the Australia travel guide and our page on the Australian dollar.

Cards work almost everywhere, including the Central Market. Buses and trams take no cash, so tap a card or phone or buy a metroCARD; the machine at the airport bus stop takes cash and eftpos. Carry AUD 150 to 250 in cash as a backup, and when a terminal or ATM offers rupees, choose Australian dollars.
