Rotorua and Taupō, about an hour apart in the central North Island, sit on the Taupō Volcanic Zone: geothermal parks and Māori culture in Rotorua, the lake and the Tongariro Alpine Crossing from Taupō. Rotorua is about three hours' drive from Auckland, Air New Zealand flies there from Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, and InterCity buses link both towns.
At Wai-O-Tapu (about NZD 52 online), the Champagne Pool steams inside its orange rim and the Lady Knox Geyser erupts at 10:15 am daily; arrive by 9:45 am. The Redwoods forest is free, and its Treewalk costs NZD 45. For Māori culture, Te Puia's guided tour costs NZD 105 and its evening with a hāngī dinner NZD 203, and Te Pā Tū (formerly Tamaki Māori Village) holds a summer feast for NZD 290; expect NZD 188 to 290 for an evening with dinner.
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is 20.2 km and takes 7 to 8 hours in summer. The trailheads are far apart and parking at Mangatepōpō is limited to four hours from Labour Weekend to April, so most walkers take a shuttle: about NZD 75 return from National Park village or NZD 130 from Taupō. Booking on DOC's site is free and recommended. Tongariro was New Zealand's first national park (gifted in 1887, established in 1894) and is on UNESCO's list for both nature and culture; parts burned in late 2025 and are under a rāhui, a customary closure.
Huka Falls is free, Craters of the Moon costs NZD 15.30, and the Māori rock carvings at Mine Bay on Lake Taupō can be reached only by boat or kayak. Indian passport holders need a Visitor Visa, applied for online before travel: NZD 441, including the NZD 100 International Visitor Levy, and Immigration New Zealand decides 80% within two weeks. The NZeTA is not open to Indians.
