Buy New Zealand DollarsAuckland at a glance
Auckland, New Zealand's largest city and the arrival point for most Indian visitors, is a harbour city built across dozens of dormant volcanoes, with wine islands a ferry ride away. Give it three or four days: the city centre and waterfront, a day on Waiheke Island and a climb up one of the volcanic cones. There is no direct flight from India; Singapore Airlines and Air New Zealand via Singapore, Cathay Pacific via Hong Kong, Emirates via Dubai, Malaysia Airlines via Kuala Lumpur and Air India via Sydney or Melbourne all connect.
The SkyBus no longer runs. From the airport, the AirportLink bus (every 10 minutes) meets trains at Puhinui station, NZD 6.50 to the city with a contactless card or HOP card. SkyDrive runs nonstop to SkyCity for NZD 22 (cards only), and taxis charge fixed fares of NZD 62 to 105 to the city centre.
Auckland Transport's buses, trains and most ferries take contactless Visa, Mastercard and phone payments at the adult HOP fare, capped at NZD 20 a day, though overseas-issued cards may be charged a transaction fee. The Waiheke ferry is separate: Fullers360 charges NZD 65 return (NZD 48.50 off-peak) for the 40-minute crossing. The City Rail Link opened in September 2026, so older train maps are out of date.
The Sky Tower costs NZD 47, the Auckland War Memorial Museum NZD 32 for international visitors (less while some galleries are closed), and Mount Eden is free. Indian passport holders need a Visitor Visa, applied for online before travel: NZD 441, including the NZD 100 International Visitor Levy, and Immigration New Zealand decides 80% within two weeks. The NZeTA is not open to Indians.
What to see and do
The centre, the waterfront and the ferry terminal are walkable; Mount Eden and the museum are a short bus ride away, and Waiheke and Devonport a ferry ride.

Waiheke Island
About 40 minutes by Fullers360 ferry into the Hauraki Gulf, for vineyards, olive groves and beaches: NZD 65 return, or NZD 48.50 off-peak. Contactless and HOP cards are not valid on this ferry.

Mount Eden
Maungawhau, a volcanic cone a short bus ride from the centre, free to climb, with a deep grassy crater and views over the city. The summit has been closed to private cars since 2016.

Auckland War Memorial Museum
Māori and Pacific treasures, natural history and New Zealand's war memorial, in the Auckland Domain. International visitors pay NZD 32, reduced while the Māori Court and Pacific galleries are closed; Aucklanders go free.

Devonport
A short ferry ride across the harbour, with Victorian shopfronts and two volcanic cones, North Head and Mount Victoria, to climb for views back to the city. This ferry takes contactless cards.
Paying in Auckland
For the dollar itself, entry rules for Indians, biosecurity and how much cash to carry, see the New Zealand travel guide and the New Zealand dollar page, and before you fly, read how to avoid extra ATM fees in New Zealand.
Cards and phone payments work almost everywhere, though some merchants add a card surcharge, which is still legal, so check before you tap. On public transport, tap on and off with the same card.

Tapping a card on the Waiheke ferry
Contactless and HOP cards are not valid on Fullers360's Waiheke service. Buy a ticket first: NZD 65 return.
