Brno, the Czech Republic's second city and the capital of South Moravia, is a working university town rather than a postcard: cafes, modernist architecture and Moravian wine country on the doorstep. Direct trains from Prague take about 2 hours 40 minutes and Vienna is 1 hour 30 minutes the other way, so Brno fits neatly between the two capitals.
Villa Tugendhat, Mies van der Rohe's UNESCO-listed modernist house, is the headline and hard to get into: the basic tour costs CZK 450, tickets are sold online only and sell out within moments of release, so book the day sales open. Špilberk Castle, a hilltop fortress that was once a notorious prison, charges CZK 190 for its casemates and CZK 70 for the lookout tower, and the twin spires of the Cathedral of St Peter and St Paul are the ones on the 10-koruna coin.
Beneath the Capuchin church, the Capuchin Crypt holds the naturally mummified remains of about 40 of the roughly 200 friars and benefactors buried there between 1656 and 1784 (CZK 140, plus CZK 30 to take photos). The Labyrinth under the Zelný trh vegetable market, a network of old cellars, costs CZK 200.
There is no direct flight from India to the Czech Republic, so most Indian visitors fly into Prague or Vienna through a Gulf or European hub. Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa, the country uses the koruna, not the euro, and hotels in central Brno add a local fee of CZK 40 a night per adult.
Where to stay
Brno's centre is compact, and trams cover the rest of the city.

Around Náměstí Svobody
Brno's main square: central, walkable to the Old Town Hall, the cathedral and Špilberk, and the standard first-time base.

Veveří
A local neighbourhood north-west of the centre with cafes and galleries, quieter than the main square.

Near the main station
Practical for the trains to Prague and Vienna, a few minutes on foot from the old town.
Paying in Brno
For the koruna itself, entry rules for Indians, the VAT refund and how much cash to carry, see the Czech Republic travel guide, and before you fly, read why one kind of ATM in Prague costs about 6% more.
Cards and contactless work almost everywhere, but terminals and ATMs in tourist spots often offer to charge you in rupees: always choose CZK. Keep CZK 1,000 to 2,000 for smaller cafes and stalls, and use bank ATMs rather than standalone machines.
What Brno actually costs
Set the length and style of your trip to see what to budget, in Czech koruna and Indian rupees.
Indicative, excluding international flights and accommodation, per person per day. Converted at the verified mid-market rate on 7 October 2026, CZK 1 ≈ ₹4.43, not a Matrix board rate.
Budget roughly ₹3,100 to ₹11,520 per person per day on the ground, excluding flights and accommodation.

Getting around
Central Brno is walkable, and most sights are a short walk from Náměstí Svobody. Trams cover longer hops; save taxis and ride-hailing apps for late nights or heavy bags.
Common mistakes in Brno
Leaving Villa Tugendhat to chance
Tours are sold online only and sell out within moments of release. Book the day sales open.
Paying in rupees at the card machine
When a terminal or ATM offers to charge you in rupees, choose koruna. The rupee option lets the operator set its own rate, and tourist areas push it hard.
Photographing the crypt without a permit
Photos in the Capuchin Crypt need a CZK 30 permit on top of the CZK 140 ticket.
Assuming euros are accepted
The Czech Republic uses the koruna, not the euro. Places that take euros usually give a poor rate, so pay in CZK.

The fee is €90 for adults, decisions normally take up to 15 days, and the embassy suggests booking your appointment at least 45 days ahead. ETIAS, the EU's planned travel authorisation, is only for visa-exempt travellers and does not replace the visa.
