Overview

Český Krumlov at a glance

Český Krumlov is a small South Bohemian town wrapped around a bend of the Vltava, beneath the second-largest castle complex in the Czech Republic. Its historic centre has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992, and it is at its best early in the morning and in the evening, after the day-trip coaches from Prague leave, so stay a night if you can.

RegioJet buses leave Prague's Na Knížecí station, by Anděl metro on line B, every hour and take about 2 hours 40 minutes for CZK 209 to 299; FlixBus runs from several Prague stops in 2 hours 25 minutes to 3 hours 20 minutes. The train is now just as quick: about 2 hours 30 minutes, direct on one daily express or with a change at České Budějovice.

Inside the castle, guided Route I costs CZK 300 and runs from April to October (closed on Mondays), Route II costs CZK 260 from May to September, and the Baroque Theatre CZK 400. The castle museum and tower share a CZK 280 ticket and open all year, and the castle garden is free. From November to March the guided interiors are closed.

The town has few ATMs, so arrive with koruna. Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa, and hotels add a local fee of CZK 50 a night per adult.

Paying here

Paying in Český Krumlov

For the koruna itself, entry rules for Indians, the VAT refund and how much cash to carry, see the Czech Republic travel guide, and before you fly, read why one kind of ATM in Prague costs about 6% more.

Hotels, restaurants and shops take cards, but ATMs are few in a town this size, so bring a koruna float from Prague. Always choose CZK when a terminal offers a currency choice.

Things to know

Common mistakes in Český Krumlov

Seeing it only as a day trip

The town is crowded from mid-morning to mid-afternoon. Stay a night to see it quiet.

Planning a winter castle tour

The guided castle interiors close from November to March; only the museum and tower stay open.

Counting on an ATM in town

There are few. Bring koruna from Prague.

Paying in rupees at the card machine

When a terminal or ATM offers to charge you in rupees, choose koruna. The rupee option lets the operator set its own rate, and tourist areas push it hard.
