Karlovy Vary is the Czech Republic's best-known spa town, built along the Teplá river around its hot mineral springs, and since 2021 part of the Great Spa Towns of Europe UNESCO listing, with Mariánské Lázně and Františkovy Lázně. Come by bus from Prague: about 2 hours 15 minutes on RegioJet from Florenc, or less on FlixBus, for CZK 140 to 260, against 3 hours 30 minutes by train.
Fifteen public springs, most in or near the colonnades, are free to drink from. Buy a spouted spa cup, sip slowly as you walk, and move along rather than blocking the spring. The Mill Colonnade, with its 124 Corinthian columns, is the grandest of the colonnades.
The Diana funicular climbs through the spa forest, for about CZK 110 one way or CZK 165 return, to the free Diana Lookout Tower, which closes only in January. Grandhotel Pupp stood in for a Montenegro hotel in Casino Royale, and the town's wafers, lázeňské oplatky, are sold warm at the colonnades. The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival returns from 2 to 10 July 2027.
Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa, and hotels add a local fee of CZK 50 a night per adult. Stay a night if you want time for a proper spa treatment.
Where to stay
The spa quarter is compact and walkable along the river.

By the colonnades
The spa quarter along the Teplá, walkable to every colonnade and spring; the classic base.

Around Grandhotel Pupp
The quieter southern end of the spa quarter, with grand old hotels and the funicular close by.

Near the bus terminal
In the newer town, cheaper and practical for buses to Prague, a short walk from the colonnades.
Paying in Karlovy Vary
For the koruna itself, entry rules for Indians, the VAT refund and how much cash to carry, see the Czech Republic travel guide, and before you fly, read why one kind of ATM in Prague costs about 6% more.
Hotels, spas and restaurants take cards. Keep koruna for wafers, spa cups and small stalls at the colonnades, and always choose CZK when a terminal offers a currency choice.

Getting around
The spa quarter is walkable along the Teplá, and the funicular takes you up the hill. Local buses link the bus terminal and the newer town with the colonnades.
Common mistakes in Karlovy Vary
Drinking too much spring water
The water is hot, salty and strongly mineral. Sip a little over several minutes rather than downing it.
Blocking the spring
Fill your cup and move on. The spouted cup is made for sipping as you walk.
Taking the train from Prague
The train takes about 3 hours 30 minutes; the bus about 2 hours 15 minutes.
Paying in rupees at the card machine
When a terminal or ATM offers to charge you in rupees, choose koruna. The rupee option lets the operator set its own rate, and tourist areas push it hard.
