What is the currency of Sweden?
The currency of Sweden is the Swedish krona, code SEK, written kr. One krona is divided into 100 öre, the plural is kronor, and Sveriges Riksbank issues the notes and coins. The krona replaced the riksdaler in 1873 and has floated since 1992, so against the rupee it moves with the market: on 5 Oct 2026, one Swedish krona was worth about ₹10.45 at our selling rate. A quote in SEK currency always means this krona, and Sweden never adopted the euro: its voters rejected it in a referendum in September 2003.

Sweden currency notes and coins
Swedish money comes as six banknotes and four coins, but cards are the most common way to pay: the Riksbank's 2025 Payments Report says many small retailers have stopped taking cash, and since 1 July 2026 staffed grocery stores and pharmacies have had to accept it. The notes show six people on the front and six regions on the back, and they arrived in two stages, in October 2015 and October 2016. Each note is shown with what it costs in rupees at our selling rate today.

Created under parliament to replace the Banco, and the issuer of the krona today.
The bank that issued Europe's first banknotes
Sweden issued Europe's first banknotes in 1661. The private bank behind them did not last, and the bank that replaced it in 1668 is the Riksbank that issues the krona today.
Europe's first banknotes
Stockholms Banco, a private bank, issues credit notes: they are lent out rather than matched by deposits. Lighter new coins had triggered a run on it.
The Banco fails
The private bank does not last. The Riksbank's own timeline records the failure of its notes and its bank.
Parliament starts again
Riksens Ständers Bank, the future Riksbank, is created under parliament and replaces the Banco.
Sveriges Riksbank
The same bank, in Stockholm, now issues the notes and coins of the Swedish krona.

A krona that floats free
The Swedish krona has no fixed rate. Sweden dropped it in 1992 and the market has set the price since, so its price in rupees can change from one day to the next.
No fixed rate since 1992
Sweden dropped its fixed rate in 1992 and left the krona to float. The market sets its price every day, and the rupee price moves with it.
Outside the euro
Swedish voters rejected the euro in a referendum in September 2003, so the krona is still Sweden's own money.

Sveriges Riksbank was created in 1668 as Riksens Ständers Bank, under parliament, and it issues the krona today.

Spending Swedish kronor in Sweden
Cards are the most common way to pay in Sweden, says the Riksbank's 2025 Payments Report, and many small shops have stopped taking cash. Three things that help on the first day.
Lead with a card
Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted, and contactless is normal, even on Stockholm buses and ferries. Swish, the national payment app, needs a Swedish bank account and personal number, so a visitor pays by card.
Visa · Mastercard · contactlessSome shops refuse cash
Many small shops have stopped taking cash. Since 1 July 2026 staffed grocery stores and pharmacies must accept it, though other shops may still refuse. Carry a little all the same: a 1 kr coin is worth about ₹10.45 and the 20 kr note, the smallest, about ₹208.90.
1 kr ₹10.45 · 20 kr ₹208.90Tipping is not expected
Service is included, so a tip is not expected. In a sit-down restaurant people round up the bill, it is rare elsewhere, and a card terminal may let you key in a total that includes a tip.
Round up the billTaking Swedish kronor from India
The Reserve Bank of India's rules apply to every currency, and the Swedish krona is no exception.
Up to the equivalent of USD 3,000 per trip can leave India as Swedish krona notes. The rest goes on a forex card or as a bank transfer.
Every resident can send up to USD 250,000 abroad each financial year under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme, travel included.
Tax collected at source applies once your foreign-exchange purchases in a financial year cross ₹10 lakh: nil when an education loan pays, 2% for self-funded education and medical treatment, and 20% for travel and everything else. It is credited against your income tax when you file.
