Oman currency in one paragraph

What is the currency of Oman?

The currency of Oman is the Omani rial, code OMR, written RO or ر.ع.. One rial is divided into 1,000 baisa, which is why Omani prices carry three decimal places. The Central Bank of Oman issues it. Oman has had its own currency since 1970, when the Rial Saidi replaced the Gulf rupee, a special issue of the Reserve Bank of India, and it became the Rial Omani in 1972. It is fixed at US$2.6008 and is the third strongest currency unit in the world: on 5 Oct 2026, one rial was worth about ₹255.89 at our selling rate.

The 10-rial note shows Sultan Haitham and the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque on its front, and the Great Mosque of Al Baleed on its back.

A sign of its own

The rial gets its own sign

Like the rupee in 2010, the Omani rial now has a symbol of its own. The Central Bank of Oman launched it in November 2025, and in September 2026 it joined the world's computers.

  1. The sign is launched

The Central Bank of Oman unveils an official rial sign: the Arabic letters ʿayn and rāʾ joined, crossed by two parallel lines for stability and strength.

  2. Before the number

The bank's guidelines put the sign in front of the amount with a space, the way prices already read RO 1.500.

  3. Into Unicode

Unicode 18.0 adds it as U+20C4, OMANI RIAL SIGN. Phones and fonts will pick it up over the coming months; until then prices keep using RO and OMR.

Third in the world

Why the rial is worth so much

Only the Kuwaiti and Bahraini dinars are worth more per unit. Three things put the rial there.

  • It started at one pound

The first rial, in May 1970, was issued at par with the British pound, and when the Rial Omani replaced it in 1972 it did so one for one, so the unit stayed large.

  • Fixed to the dollar since 1986

One rial is US$2.6008, a rate the Central Bank of Oman has held unchanged since 1986. The IMF classes it as a conventional peg.

  • A narrow band

The central bank buys dollars at RO 0.384 and sells them at RO 0.385, which keeps the rial within a whisker of its fixed rate.

Prices run to three decimals

A rial is 1,000 baisa, so prices are written to three decimal places after RO, the Oman money symbol: RO 1.500 is one rial and 500 baisa, about ₹383.83. Small prices are often given in baisa alone, such as 250 baisa.

RO 1.500 = 1 rial + 500 baisa

Is it Omani rial or Omani riyal?

The official spelling, on the notes, at the Central Bank of Oman and in the ISO list, is rial: the Omani rial. Oman riyal, Omani riyal and Oman rial all mean the same money, and Omani newspapers write riyal too. There is no Oman dinar or Oman dirham, and Oman stopped using rupees in 1970.

Why was it called the Rial Saidi?
