Overview

Sylhet and Srimangal at a glance

Sylhet and Srimangal are in Bangladesh's hilly north-east, close to Meghalaya: tea gardens, forest and wetlands instead of the flat delta. Sylhet is the regional city and a pilgrimage centre around the shrine of Hazrat Shah Jalal; Srimangal, about two hours south, is the heart of tea country, with about 42 of Bangladesh's 172 tea gardens. Most travellers give the pair three or four days.

The Parabat Express leaves Dhaka at 6:30 am, reaches Srimangal at 10:32 am and Sylhet at 1 pm (no service on Mondays). The Jayantika (11:15 am, not Tuesdays), the Kalni (2:55 pm, not Fridays) and the overnight Upaban (10 pm, arriving 5 am, not Wednesdays) cover the rest of the day. Since December 2025, Dhaka to Sylhet costs BDT 410 in Shovon chair class, BDT 788 in Snigdha, BDT 943 for an AC seat and BDT 1,465 for an AC berth. Flights from Dhaka take about 50 minutes; Sylhet's airport also has flights to London, Manchester, Dubai and Muscat, but none to India.

Ratargul, about 26 km from Sylhet, is Bangladesh's best-known freshwater swamp forest, seen from a small boat. It is at its best from July to October, when the trees stand in deep water; in the dry months the water is far lower. At the last published rates (2020), foreigners paid BDT 500 to enter and BDT 1,000 for a boat, so check on the day.

Indian passport holders need a visa before they travel, from a Bangladesh mission or visa centre in India: there is no visa fee for Indians, and no visa on arrival for Indian tourists.

Best places

What to see and do

Sylhet and Srimangal are about two hours apart by train or road. Ratargul and Jaflong are day trips from Sylhet; Lawachara and the tea gardens are around Srimangal.

The Shrine of Hazrat Shah Jalal, Sylhet and Srimangal

The Shrine of Hazrat Shah Jalal

The dargah of the Sufi saint who came to Sylhet in 1303, a place of pilgrimage for about 600 years. Shoes come off and shorts are not allowed; women can enter the complex but generally not the tomb chamber.

Jaflong, Sylhet and Srimangal

Jaflong

About 56 km from Sylhet, where the clear Piyain river comes out of the Meghalaya hills over beds of stones. Go in the dry season: quarrying has scarred parts of the riverbank, and flooding can close the area in the monsoon.

Srimangal's tea gardens, Sylhet and Srimangal

Srimangal's tea gardens

Walk the estate roads around Srimangal, then try the seven-layer tea, seven coloured layers in one glass, at Nilkantha Tea Cabin, which has two outlets in town. A glass cost about BDT 70 to 80 at last report.

Lawachara National Park, Sylhet and Srimangal

Lawachara National Park

About 1,250 hectares of semi-evergreen forest near Srimangal, crossed by the railway line, and the best-known place in Bangladesh to see western hoolock gibbons. Foreigners pay BDT 1,150 with VAT, ten times the local rate, and there is no SAARC discount.

Paying here

Paying in Sylhet and Srimangal

For the taka itself, entry rules for Indians, how much cash you can bring in and how cards and ATMs work, see the Bangladesh travel guide, and the Bangladeshi taka page for its rate against the rupee.

Sylhet has plenty of bank ATMs and its bigger hotels take cards. Tea stalls, CNG auto-rickshaws, boats and the park gates take cash, and so do most guesthouses around Srimangal, so carry enough taka for each day trip.

Getting around

In both towns, CNG auto-rickshaws and taxis cover short hops; agree the fare first. For Jaflong and Ratargul, or the tea estates and Lawachara around Srimangal, hire a car and driver through your hotel for the day. Between the two towns the train takes about two hours: the 4 pm Parabat from Sylhet reaches Srimangal at about 6 pm.
