Swedish Lapland is Sweden's Arctic north: the northern lights at Abisko, the ICEHOTEL at Jukkasjärvi, husky sleds, Sámi reindeer herding, and Kiruna, a mining town rebuilding its centre further east. Give it four days. Fly from Stockholm to Kiruna or Luleå, or take the night train; from December 2026 SJ brings back a direct daily sleeper from Stockholm via Luleå and Kiruna to Narvik.
The aurora season runs from about September to March, and September, October and March avoid the deepest cold. Kiruna has no sunrise from about 11 December to 1 January and no sunset from about 26 May to 18 July. Expect about minus 15°C in December and February and minus 20°C in January, sometimes minus 30°C.
Tours drive the cost: the Aurora Sky Station costs from SEK 1,295 a night (19 October 2026 to 27 March 2027), dog sledding from SEK 2,050 as a passenger, and an ICEHOTEL day visit SEK 325. ICEHOTEL 37 opens on 11 December 2026, and the year-round ICEHOTEL 365 takes no cash anywhere.
Kiruna's station is 6 km out of town, with a free shuttle, and SJ sells tickets online only. Winter tyres are compulsory on snow and ice; if you have never driven on snow, take tours instead. Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa: EUR 90 plus the VFS service charge at one of nine VFS centres in India, with a decision normally within 15 days, and Sweden asks for proof of SEK 700 for each day of the visit.
What to see and do
Kiruna is the hub; Jukkasjärvi and the ICEHOTEL are 17 km east, and Abisko and the Aurora Sky Station 93 km west on the road and railway to Narvik.
The Aurora Sky Station
A chairlift up Mount Nuolja in Abisko to an observation station above the valley cloud, 20:30 to 01:00: from SEK 1,295 with overalls, boots, the lift and a guide, or SEK 2,395 with dinner.
ICEHOTEL
The ice hotel at Jukkasjärvi, 17 km from Kiruna: ICEHOTEL 37 opens on 11 December 2026, ICEHOTEL 365 is open all year, and a day visit costs SEK 325. No cash.
Dog sledding
Husky tours on the frozen Torne River from Jukkasjärvi, from SEK 2,050 as a passenger, or SEK 7,050 driving your own team on a lunch tour.
Kiruna
The mining town on the move: the LKAB mine tour costs SEK 590, and Kiruna Church, rolled 5 km to its new site in August 2025, is closed for restoration until 2027.
Paying in Swedish Lapland

ICEHOTEL takes no cash anywhere, Luleå buses refuse cash, and most tour operators take cards or prepayment online. SEK 300 per person covers a remote kiosk or a reader that fails in the cold; keep your card and phone in an inner pocket, as batteries drain fast at minus 20°C. Tipping is not expected. Book aurora and husky tours before you fly.

Getting around
SJ trains link Kiruna, Abisko, Riksgränsen and Narvik all year, with tickets sold online only. Regional buses take cards on board, and line 91 to Abisko and Riksgränsen runs only in set seasons. Car hire desks open at Kiruna Airport for each flight, but polar night, black ice and reindeer on the E10 make tours the safer choice for first-timers.
Common mistakes in Swedish Lapland
Showing too little money for the visa
Sweden asks for SEK 700 for each day of the visit, not the SEK 450 older guides quote. A sponsor or host can cover it.
Dressing in cotton
Cotton holds sweat and freezes. Wear thermal and wool layers with a windproof shell, a hat and mittens.
Booking one night for the aurora
Cloud can cover the sky for days. Plan at least three nights, one of them in Abisko.
Trying to buy train tickets at Kiruna station
The station is unmanned and SJ sells tickets only online.

In autumn 2026 travellers change in Boden. From December 2026 SJ brings back a direct daily sleeper from Stockholm to Narvik via Luleå and Kiruna; Stockholm to Narvik takes about 18 hours.
No Indian restaurant was listed in Kiruna in October 2026; Luleå has Indiska Grytan on Storgatan. Pack ready-to-eat meals and ask your hotel for vegetarian dishes in advance.
On 27 October 2026 one krona was ₹9.57 at the mid-market rate, so SEK 100 is about ₹960. Sweden uses the krona, not the euro.
