Gothenburg is Sweden's second city, on the west coast: Liseberg amusement park, the cafés of Haga, seafood, and a car-free southern archipelago reached on an ordinary city ticket. Three days is right, with one in the islands. From India, connect through Istanbul or a European hub to Landvetter, or fly into Stockholm and take the SJ train, about 3 hours 30 minutes.
The Flygbussarna coach from Landvetter to Göteborg C costs SEK 129 and takes 30 to 40 minutes. In town, tapping a contactless Visa or Mastercard on any tram, bus or boat in zone A buys a SEK 38 ticket valid for 90 minutes, and a 24-hour zone A ticket costs SEK 125. Västtrafik does not mention prepaid cards, so try one ride and keep the To Go app as a backup.
Zone A covers the trams and the ferries to the southern islands from Saltholmen, and the northern islands of Hönö and Öckerö too. Liseberg admission starts at SEK 125 online, Universeum at SEK 225, and the Museum Card (SEK 150) covers four museums, including the Museum of Art.
Universeum and the Museum of Art take cards only, and staffed grocery and pharmacy checkouts must accept cash since 1 July 2026. Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa: EUR 90 plus the VFS service charge at one of nine VFS centres in India, with a decision normally within 15 days, and Sweden asks for proof of SEK 700 for each day of the visit.
What to see and do
Liseberg is off Avenyn, the Paddan boats leave from Kungsportsplatsen near Feskekörka, and Saltholmen for the islands is about 35 minutes by tram.

Liseberg
The amusement park by Avenyn: admission from SEK 125 online, or SEK 425 with an unlimited Ride Pass in the Halloween season (2 October to 1 November 2026). It turns into a Christmas park in November and December.

The Paddan canal boats
A 50-minute guided tour from Kungsportsplatsen under the city's low bridges and out into the harbour, SEK 269.

The southern archipelago
Car-free islands such as Styrsö, Donsö and Vrångö: tram 11 or bus 114 to Saltholmen, then the ferry, all on a zone A ticket.

Feskekörka
The fish market hall nicknamed the "fish church" for its shape, by the canal, at the heart of the city's seafood culture.
Paying in Gothenburg
For the krona itself, the Schengen visa for Indians, cash limits and VAT refunds, see the Sweden travel guide, and the SEK to INR page for today's rate. Swedish kronor load on the Matrix Forex Card, and in Sweden a card that taps matters more than cash.
Trams, buses and archipelago boats run on cards and the app, and Liseberg sells its best prices online. Swish needs a Swedish bank and ID, so visitors cannot use it. A cash float of SEK 300 for the stay is plenty. Tipping is optional: round up, or add 5 to 10% for good table service.
What Gothenburg actually costs

Indicative, excluding international flights and accommodation, per person per day. Converted at the verified mid-market rate on 27 October 2026, SEK 1 ≈ ₹9.57, not a Matrix board rate.
Budget roughly ₹5,740 to ₹17,230 per person per day on the ground, excluding flights and accommodation.

Getting around
Västtrafik runs the trams, buses and many ferries; zone A covers nearly everything a visitor needs. One card pays for one traveller, use the same card or phone all trip, and tap tickets cover zone A only, so buy Marstrand or zone B trips in the app.
Common mistakes in Gothenburg
Showing too little money for the visa
Sweden asks for SEK 700 for each day of the visit, not the SEK 450 older guides quote. A sponsor or host can cover it.
Tapping once for the whole family
Each card buys one adult ticket. Give everyone a card or buy extra tickets in the To Go app.
Riding a tap ticket to Marstrand
Tap tickets cover zone A only; buy a zone ticket in the app first.
Buying Liseberg and Universeum tickets at the gate
Both cost more on the day; Universeum adds SEK 30 at the door.
Gothenburg FAQs
Tapping a contactless Visa or Mastercard on board buys a zone A adult ticket for SEK 38, valid for 90 minutes. A 24-hour zone A ticket costs SEK 125 and a 72-hour ticket SEK 250 in the Västtrafik To Go app.
Yes. Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa: EUR 90 plus the VFS service charge, applied for in person at one of nine VFS Global centres in India, with a decision normally within 15 days. Sweden asks for proof of SEK 700 for each day of the visit, and the EU Entry/Exit System takes fingerprints and a photo at the first entry.
Yes. A zone A ticket covers the tram or bus to Saltholmen and the ferry to the southern islands; Hönö and Öckerö in the north are in zone A too, and their car ferry is free.
By the Flygbussarna coach to Göteborg C: SEK 129 for adults, SEK 99 for ages 8 to 25, about 30 to 40 minutes. It also stops at Kungsportsplatsen and Korsvägen.
SJ's nonstop high-speed trains take about 3 hours 28 minutes to 3 hours 43 minutes between the two central stations.
Första Långgatan has several Indian restaurants, including Taj Mahal and Daawat Masthugget, and Bombay Street and Masala Kitchen are near Liseberg. Govindas, Café Andrum and Solrosen serve vegetarian food.
On 27 October 2026 one krona was ₹9.57 at the mid-market rate, so SEK 100 is about ₹960. Sweden uses the krona, not the euro.
