Overview

Seville at a glance

Seville, the capital of Andalusia, is the city most people picture when they think of Spain: Moorish palaces, orange trees and flamenco. Its historic centre is compact and walkable, and it is the cheapest of Spain's big three for hotels, about €135 a night on average in 2026 against €164 in Madrid and €184 in Barcelona. High-speed trains reach Madrid in about 2 hours 40 minutes.

The Royal Alcázar, a palace built for Christian kings by Moorish-trained craftsmen and still used by the Spanish royal family, costs €15.50, plus €5.50 for the upper royal rooms. Next door, the cathedral, the largest Gothic cathedral in the world, costs €13 online or €14 at the door, including the Giralda tower, climbed by 35 ramps rather than stairs, and the Church of El Salvador. Columbus's tomb inside is carried by four heralds.

Plaza de España, built for the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition with tiled alcoves for 48 Spanish provinces, and the María Luisa Park beside it are free. Flamenco shows start at about €20 without a drink and run to €94.60 with dinner at the big tablaos. Córdoba, with its Mosque-Cathedral (€15, free Monday to Saturday from 8:30 am to 9:30 am), is 40 to 45 minutes away by high-speed train.

There is no nonstop flight between India and Spain, so most Indian visitors connect through a Gulf or European hub. Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa, applied for through BLS International. Seville charges no tourist tax, and from June to September afternoons often pass 40°C, so sightsee in the morning.

Best places

Where to stay

The historic centre is compact; most sights are within 20 to 30 minutes on foot of each other.

Santa Cruz, Seville

Santa Cruz

The old Jewish quarter beside the cathedral and the Alcázar: narrow lanes and the most atmospheric base, busy in the middle of the day.

Around Plaza Nueva, Seville

Around Plaza Nueva

The Centro around Plaza Nueva and Calle Sierpes: the main shopping streets, a short walk to the cathedral, and usually better value than Santa Cruz.

Triana, Seville

Triana

Across the Guadalquivir: the old potters' and flamenco quarter, with local tapas bars and river views, a short walk from the centre.

Paying in Seville

For the euro itself, the visa, the VAT refund and how much cash to carry, see the Spain travel guide, and before you fly, our forex guide for Schengen trips from India.

Cards work at hotels, restaurants and the main sights, but smaller, older tapas bars may prefer cash, so keep a small euro float. Bank ATMs usually charge foreign cards a flat fee, shown on screen before you confirm, and when a terminal or ATM offers rupees, choose euros. RuPay is rarely accepted in Spain.

Getting around

Getting around

The historic centre is best on foot. Seville does have a metro, but its one line skirts the old town, with Puerta Jerez, Prado de San Sebastián and San Bernardo the central stops, and does not reach Santa Justa station or the airport. Tussam buses cost €1.40 a ride, and the short Metrocentro tram runs from Plaza Nueva past the cathedral.

From the airport, the EA bus costs €6 and takes about 35 to 40 minutes, stopping at Santa Justa station and Prado de San Sebastián; taxis charge a fixed €26 to the centre on weekdays from 7 am to 9 pm, and €29 at night, at weekends and on holidays. From Santa Justa, buses 21, C1 and C2 run to Prado de San Sebastián.

Things to know

Common mistakes in Seville

Sitting at a terrace table

Bars often charge more at the terrace than at the counter, which is legal only if the menu says so. Eat at the bar for the local price.

Sightseeing at midday in summer

From June to September, afternoons often pass 40°C. See the Alcázar and the cathedral early, and rest in the afternoon.

Leaving the Alcázar to chance

Book a timed ticket online, especially in spring. The free Monday slots book out months ahead.

Paying in rupees at the card machine

When a terminal or ATM offers to charge you in rupees, choose euros. The rupee option lets the operator set its own rate.

Semana Santa runs from 21 to 28 March 2027, and the Feria de Abril is expected from 12 to 18 April 2027. Both are spectacular, but hotel prices rise sharply and rooms sell out early.
