Overview

Salzburg at a glance

Salzburg is Mozart's birthplace and Austria's baroque showpiece: an Old Town of domes and narrow lanes on the Salzach river, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996, beneath the Hohensalzburg Fortress, begun in 1077 and one of the largest castles in Central Europe. Two or three days is enough, and it pairs naturally with Hallstatt, about 2 hours away.

The fortress ticket with the FestungsBahn funicular costs €15.50, or €19.20 including the Prince's Chambers and the Magic Theatre; walking up the steep path saves a few euros. Mozart's Birthplace on Getreidegasse costs €18, or €25 with the Mozart Residence across the river, and Salzburg Cathedral, where Mozart was baptised, charges a €7 preservation fee. Mirabell Gardens, a Sound of Music location, are free.

The Salzburg Card covers 29 sights, including the fortress, both Mozart houses and the trick fountains at Hellbrunn Palace (€16.50 on their own, open until 1 November), plus the city buses: €38 for 24 hours from April to October and €35 in winter. Sound of Music tours cost €50 to €75 and take 3.5 to 4 hours. The Christmas market runs from 19 November 2026 to 1 January, and the Salzburg Festival from 16 July to 29 August 2027.

There are no flights from India to Salzburg. Air India flies nonstop from Delhi to Vienna, about two and a half hours away by train, and Lufthansa from Delhi to Munich, about 1 hour 45 minutes away. Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa, and hotels add a local tax of €3.50 per person a night, but they also give overnight guests a free Guest Mobility Ticket for buses and trains across Salzburg province.

Getting around

Getting around

The Old Town is compact and largely pedestrianised, and trolleybuses cover the rest. Buy a 60-minute ticket (€2.60) or a 24-hour ticket (€5.20) from the machine at the stop or in the app, since trolleybus drivers do not sell tickets. If you stay overnight, ask your hotel for the free Guest Mobility Ticket, which covers public transport across Salzburg province for your whole stay.

From the airport, trolleybus 10 reaches the Old Town in about 17 minutes. Railjet Xpress trains from Vienna Hauptbahnhof normally take 2 hours 25 minutes (until 12 December 2026 they run every two hours and take about 15 minutes longer, because of line works in Germany), and trains from Munich about 1 hour 45 minutes; for Hallstatt, bus 150 leaves the main station for Bad Ischl.

Things to know

Common mistakes in Salzburg

Buying the Salzburg Card for a light day

It pays off only if you see three or more paid sights in a day; for one or two, buy single tickets.

Missing the free Guest Mobility Ticket

Overnight guests ride buses and trains across Salzburg province free. Ask your hotel at check-in.

Walking up to the fortress in the wet

The path is steep and the cobbles get slippery. Take the funicular, which also brings walkers back down.

Paying in rupees at the card machine

When a terminal or ATM offers to charge you in rupees, choose euros. The rupee option lets the operator set its own rate.
